I was diagnosed in December and last week was suppose to have the results of my repeat HBA1C. I attended the surgery in anticipation of some news only to find out that the labs sent a message back saying they couldnt test it (something about their being abnormalities in the testing). I had more blood taken last week and went today for the results only to find there was a different reason given as to why they couldnt test the HBA1C!! However they did test the fructosamine and said that it was normal reading at 239 with no further action needed.
The nurse was excellent and rang the hospital and tried to find out as much as possible via the diabetes team, who also werent sure why they couldnt test it but said that the fructosamine test was good and its similar to a HBA1C test. Does anyone have any experience of fructosamine, this is all new to me. I now have to have another HBA1C in 2 months time

Thank you in anticipation of any light being shone on this

Not so far, and I've had 4 HbA1c tests to date. I've been on the forum for 2 years and yours is the first post I've seen regarding a fructosamine test so it's a new one on me, too.
ah well, my husband as always said I am unique!!!😉

I am happy though because when the nurse translated the fructosamine result it comes out around 39/40 and so its come down from 68.
I am still keen to get the HBA1C in 2 months time though

Do you by any chance suffer from Anaemia or B12 deficiency? My friend who had anaemia always had fructasomine rather than Hba1c.

I did have low iron historically but the recent results show that iron is good! and I am not sure about B12. Thank you I will ask for more information

Yes I‘ve heard that too @Pattidevans

The HbA1c relies upon red blood cells (the Hb part), and people who have anaemia can get unreliable results so fructosamine is the preferred method instead.

I’ve had various blood checks over the years that have had to be redone. One lot because they were taken on Friday, and they couldn’t get to the lab in time and would have had to wait over the weekend.

Hope your next one all happens without a hitch!

Thank you so much, I think I will check again with the surgery tomorrow to check whether there is signs of anaemia?. So appreciate everyones support. I dont know what I would do without this forum.

You could have a private HbA1c test and see how that works out I have used this method and got results back very quickly they just send you the kit and you post it back asap. The lab in question is also used by the NHS so it's done correctly.

How do I go about getting a private test? Could you advise as I think I will do that

Very fast results and everything in kit you need.

How easy was it to get enough of a blood sample? Was thinking of getting the "full bhoona". In for a penny and other clichés lol 🙂

Very easy the finger prick device works well and if you muck it up they will send out another kit.
