Stress and elevated BG numbers.

It's been quite the day at work; stress from start to finish taking my stellar fasting blood glucose numbers of the mid 5s into a murky 7.1 after a healthy lunch it has to be said (salad and water) to an annoying 7.3 an hour ago.

Diabetes management I'm rapidly working out is a holistic dark art which has many components aside from diet and exercise.

Any tips on stress management appreciated as I had been making great progress on keeping my blood sugars under control.

I really wouldn’t be stressing at all with levels like that Clifton. That’s pretty good management! 😉

I‘m afraid stress does cause challenges for our glucose control as explained here;

‘Under stressful conditions, cortisol provides the body with glucose by tapping into protein stores via gluconeogenesis in the liver. This energy can help an individual fight or flee a stressor. However, elevated cortisol over the long term consistently produces glucose, leading to increased blood sugar levels.’
 
People without diabetes will get 7.3 very frequently, probably even daily. So that’s one stress you don’t have to worry about at least.

Thank you! It could be because I'm 40 tomorrow...and will have a wee birthday party on Saturday (I'm told) given I've now officially left the 30s behind. As I was born in the Far East, given the time difference I guess I am 40 already as I was born at 2 minutes past midnight Malaysian time!

I agree that your numbers are not a concern but for stress management I find a good brisk walk works wonders and it will bring your BG down too.

You are right about managing BG levels being a dark art though. There are 42 known factors which affect levels, some of which we have a bit of control over, others we don't. You can only do your best with the ones you have some influence over.

Don't we all know it!
I am just 2 years down the line so I remember quite clearly what it was like in those early days. Thankfully the curve does start to level out a bit after a while but it is a continual process and there are people here with 50years in with diabetes who still learn something new.

Traditionally there are two days in the year where carbohydrates completely evaporate and have no impact - one is Christmas day, the other is your birthday. 🙂
