Hello there. 1st post for me. Polyols: what's your opinion ? As long as it's occasional use of products eg one square of chocolate, a blob of sugar free jam, do you think they are ok and allow a little bit of 'normality ' when everyone else is enjoying the real thing? I'm T2 for c13 years. Atypical in that I'm 7.5 stone, active, stick to a strict diet. Currently being investigated because of this unusual type of diabetes. As an aside is there anyone out there similar ?

Welcome @Jennyninja 🙂 They’re good laxatives! I find all that ‘diabetic’ stuff pretty vile. I just eat moderate amounts of normal chocolate and jam.

What type of diabetes are they investigating you for?

Hi Inka. Thanks for responding. Type 2. I'm still making insulin apparently...

Ah, that kind of answered my question on your other thread then. As long as Type 1/LADA has been properly ruled out, that’s ok.

So do you have a family history of Type 2?

Yup. My Mum had it and I'm half Chinese so there is a hereditary factor along with a general genetic thing with my Asian heritage.

Ok, that makes sense 🙂 If you continue to ‘confuse’ them, they might consider testing for MODY (genetic diabetes). My Type 1 presentation was atypical so I recently had extra tests when a new consultant looked back at my history. It turns out I am Type 1, just an unusual presentation.

Hi. Rather than have Polyols why not just have 85% dark chocolate etc? Bear in mind that in the early stages of LADA you will still be producing some insulin but that gradually decreases. In my case it has taken years. You could be an early stage LADA. It can be difficult to have a correct diagnosis but further C-Peptide tests over time may show a trend to lower insulin.

It is the wind that put me off any of those sorts of products. Plus the products themselves weren’t all that nice, and didn’t actually seem any better for my levels than the regular versions. For some the laxative effect is pronounced and very unpleasant. I think it’s the online reviews of Haribo Sugar Free which often get circulated as both horrifying and painfully funny.

Do you check your own BG with a blood glucose meter? That way you can see what effect a small amount of the real thing does and decide whether you think that’s a reasonable result?
