Type 1.5 LADA
Hello, a while ago I went to the doctor complaining of a sore burning leg. They did some tests and a blood test which came back as Pre-diabetic. After some online assistance my levels dropped. Recently I was drinking lots and needing the bathroom and loosing weight so I had another test. The results shot up to 118 so I was booked into the nurse and another test was done. This came out at 121. I have been given a monitor and am doing throughout the day as well as being given Gliclazide 80mg twice a day. Whilst this has been over the last 8 days , The lowest has been 6.4 but most of the time I am above 10. I have been to the hospital for bloods and my fasting was 9.1. I have noted that my vision is now completely shot, cant see the screen properly and reading my mobile is now a no no. IS this normal when you start on the meds and they get into the system? Any pointers will be happily taken

High blood glucose levels can certainly impact vision but it's likely to settle back when the BG is under control and lower.

Hi Jds73, welcome to the forum.

It's totally normal to have issues with vision and to still be experiencing symptoms for a while, for some people they last anywhere between 1-3 months.

During that time, it may be worth focusing on regular testing and your medication routine whilst creating a meal plan that supports healthy blood sugar levels.

Thanks Colin, was just the sudden onset that surprised me. Fingers crossed it all settles back down....my Computer monitor is now at 150% and still a struggle

Thanks for the response, fingers crossed it all comes together

Hi @Jds73 Have you actually been diagnosed as Type 1/LADA? I ask because if so there might be much better meds than gliclazide. It’s not recommended for Type 1s (LADA is a form of Type 1).

How high are your blood sugars going? Once you get the right medication and your sugars come down, your eyesight will gradually return to normal.

My monitor is set at 125% but that's because work insists on using tiny fonts which are invisible to anyone over the age of 50!

Cheap magnifying ready readers available in supermarkets and places like B&M, Superdrug etc!

Good luck with your scan. Do update here when you get a definite diagnosis. As I said above, it does make a difference to what meds you get and how everything progresses.

Sorry to hear about how your elevated BG levals have affected your eyes @Jds73

If you get a diagnosis with LADA, your Dr should be putting you onto insulin, on a basal:bolus (separate long acting and mealtime insulins) regimen.

If your BGs have been running high enough for a while to alter your eyesight, it would be wise to reduce them gradually over a few weeks or months rather than crashing them back down from high to in-range, as rapid changes to average BG can put pressure on the fine blood vessels in the eyes and may even cause eye damage.

Let us know how the scan goes tomorrow 🙂

I was diagnosed nearly 4 weeks ago and slowly day by day my eyesight has been getting better. I had my eyes checked by the optician about a week after diagnosis as my eyesight was blurred but it was just to check everything else was fine and it was. My phone message font size was large but I was able to reduce it a good amount yesterday. I still find I need to concentrate to focus on farther away things but it is getting better and I was told it would take several weeks to settle and had to wait 3 months before getting tested for glasses. Hopefully you will find the same with your vision, it’s scary though to begin with.

Apologies for the slow response. The scan was fine so one more thing ticked off. Coming off the Gliclazide and on to Metamofin as I am now dropping to between 3.8-4.8 around 11am each day. Nurse saying results good but would still like to know all the numbers so will speak with doc at some point. Eyes still off but getting better slowly
