A type one on insulin and you don't get enough strips to test more than a few times a WEEK?
That can't be right.
If you have a consultant then maybe contact him, or leave a message and ask how you are supposed to cope with so few chances to test.
Strips for testing ketones, @Drummer , not for testing bgs.

I think @Annette Arundell is talking about ketone testing strips (at least I hope so!)

One of the very first things we heard about Diabetes and Covid, was that one of the side effects of Covid was ketones appearing at FAR lower BGs than normal for both T1 and T2 patients.

So, first question - has your being Covid positive been absolutely ruled out ? If so, how recently ?
I had covid in December

Hi , I am no medic but I am wondering if you haven’t fully recovered from Corvid , ie have long Corvid, it is post viral thingy that some people are reporting and it seems to go on for a long time.
If so maybe this is the cause of your ketones and not feeling so good.

I don’t want to worry you but ,Their are also quite a few variants of the Corvid 19 virus , so it’s possible to get it again.

I know you have spoken to your consultant and probably your Gp as well ? , maybe they just don’t understand how rough you are feeling and how worried you must be. So please keep badgering them , I mean really lay it on the line , not gloss it over at all. Have they arranged any blood tests to try and find out what might be going on ?

I hope you start feeling much better soon , you must be so worried.

I use a Libre and I think you should be prescribed more BG test strips , 20 per month imo is not enough, esp when treating hypo’s / hypers and if you want to use the Libre’s insulin calculator . Maybe your hospital team can persuade your Gp practice to prescribe more.
I use aprox 50 a month and I don’t drive.

I think it’s ketone strips that are the 20 a month, not Glucose strips.

How many carbs are you eating in meals? I get ketones if my carbs are on the lower side of moderate, even if I’m still eating carbs, and increasing my carbs and insulin gets rid of them for me.

Hi I've asked about ketones before, I'm type 1 diabetic on levirmir & novorapid, my blood sugar control is OK, not many highs, I eat carbs in meals, but not over eating, I have at last contacted my consultant about this subject and he has no solution he can offer. I get low to moderate ketones each day have lost weight which I didn't intend to do, I eat breakfast, lunch and evening meal, my puzzle is I am with ketones most of the time, I wake up some mornings with 0.6 to 0.9, and they rise higher after lunch, which I find strange as consultant does, I take my insulin and eat carbs, I have tried not to worry, but this does not seem right, its like I'm on a keto diet, which I'm not, can anyone please advise, I have asked before but now consultant says he doesn't know, worries me, this started a few months back, and I don't feel great, I'm eating more than I ever have to try and stop it, but can't, and am spending loads on ketone blood testing strips. This is ruining my life as Al I'm doing is testing and drinking water, please help I don't know what else to do.
Hi Annette,

You've probably already looked on the internet but from a cursory search I found these reasons for "ketones". I know as you say you only have ketones in low range, the article still might give some insight into why diabetics can get ketones.

Diabetic ketoacidosis and ketones are usually triggered by:

  • An illness. An infection or other illness can cause your body to produce higher levels of certain hormones, such as adrenaline or cortisol. Unfortunately, these hormones counter the effect of insulin — sometimes triggering an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis. Pneumonia and urinary tract infections are common culprits.
  • A problem with insulin therapy. Missed insulin treatments or inadequate insulin therapy or a malfunctioning insulin pump can leave you with too little insulin in your system, triggering diabetic ketoacidosis.

Other possible triggers of diabetic ketoacidosis include:
  • Physical or emotional trauma
  • Heart attack or stroke
  • Pancreatitis
  • Pregnancy
  • Alcohol or drug abuse, particularly cocaine
  • Certain medications, such as corticosteroids and some diuretics

On dear - I really got the wrong end of the - stick.
