Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi have been paying for FSL CGM for 6 months now. No longer injecting lost 15kgs and being treated by diet alone. I under the local hospital and have read that I can ask the local health board (Wales) to fund the sensor. Has anybody else tried this?

If you are Type 2 and not on Insulin, it is quite unlikely you will get it funded, as not all Type 1 get prescribed .

I don't know about t2s but with Type 1, I had to provide a good case for the value to the CCG for them to fund Libre for me. This was based on a combination of the number of finger pricks I do every day (and the cost of the strips) and how I use the Libre to improve my diabetes management.
There is no harm in asking with a well argued case but as @grovesy suggested, don't get your hopes up - it is likely you will be an exception to the general rules if they agree.

I always want to congratulate you on the amazing improvements you have made.

Yes thanks for reply. As I understand it, LHB can fund these. Moreover I am aware of a T2DM who is at a different GP’s practice who said he could no longer fund this and GP has now prescribed it. Furthermore, I understand that the NHS only pays £20 a sensor. Has anyone tried the LHB for this?

As I understand the procedure, to request funding from LHB you need a referral from who is treating you. I am under the local hospital. I have asked for a referral but with Covid-19 it’s all answer machine. The diabetic nurses are doing other things in the hospital. However I shall pursue it. For further clarification, I eat according to my numbers. If I am say 9 first thing, I don’t eat anything until I get to 7. That’s why I rely on the FSL.

As a type 2 on basal bolus insulin I’ve been told it’s a flat no to libre or pump unless self funding, as they’re only funded for T1s.

Yes what I was trying to establish is has anyone gone through the procedure to access the LHB. In Wales we are having an election in May for the senydd who run the health service. I am quite happy to see my MS and ask why there is not funding for this important aid to managing my T2DM. Also I could consider starting a petition to the Welsh Senydd to discuss the matter. A bit of publicity to draw attention to this matter may be of benefit to everyone.

Might be helpful to find out from Diabetes Uk if they can assist.
They were involved with lobbying to get Libre prescribed to some people with Type 1. They may be able to assist with the lobbying or at least give you guidance on who to contact and how best to approach them.

I can imagine the DSNs are rather busy at the moment and yes of course you need a referral - which is why I suggested you look up the prescribing guidelines as this will give you a good indication of what circumstances are eligible for referral. In any case, do let us know how you get on.
Thank you all for your help. Another thought is has anyone tried to request help from the Veterans association? There seems to be a lot of talk about the armed services covenant but do they actually help?

Good idea, thanks.

The only nation I know of to prescribe the Libre to Type 2's is Scotland and they must be on intensive insulin therapy,, you say you NEED it to manage your diabetes but may I ask why you can't do that via finger prick? I got things down to a T that way long before I obtained the Libre

Well if you go onto YouTube and watch Abbots training programs, you will find out that the finger test, although more accurate, does not give you the full true picture. The example given is you finger test every morning and you get 7.5. However you could have highs and lows during the night. I have watched all the videos and they are very enlightening. Moreover, the new FSL2 can alert you in the night if you are having a hypo.

But you can get up and test during the night via finger prick? I did and numerous times throughout the day, without checking against a finger prick then you'll never know if what it was saying through the night was true, compression lows for a start, steep rise when you then move off of it are just 2 instances that could occur

Thanks for your input. I have signed up to FSL and to the Freestyle Portal. Through this I have been invited to Webinars which prove that finger test do not give the full picture. On their website, they have Training Resources, Freestyle Academy, case studies and lots of information. I recommend this website.

I kept my hba1c in the 30's via finger prick through testing to know what my body was doing, blood is far more accurate than the Libre as it's not testing from the same fluid, I managed perfectly well for over 2 years with just finger pricks, if you don't believe in that then that's your choice but we're all still here after using this method for years, some using it 20, 30+ years, the Libre does not eradicate the need to finger prick

I am not disputing what you are saying, I used that method for 18 years. However for the past 6 months (£620) of using FSL I have found it works for me. I have lost 15kg. My recent HbA1c was 7.4 mmol/mmoL. That’s not to say that FSL is the best CGM. FSL also recommend that you occasionally do the finger test to what difference the FSL reading is. All I can say if you go on the website, follow the Webinars and watch the various YouTube videos and then decide which would be the best method of controlling your diabetes.
