Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello,
I have had Type 2 since 2004, and generally have struggled to maintain good blood sugar - generally it is about 10 and often much higher.
About four weeks ago I tested positive for Covid 19, and generally things were mild for a week until a sharp decline after a week and I was admitted to hospital struggling to breath.
I was in hospital about a week, a very grim time.
When I came out of hospital I found I had lost an incredible 21 pounds in weight and my blood sugar is now from 5.5 to 8. Still taking my medication.
I am more or less eating what I like including lots of bread and even chocolate etc ( I know I shouldn’t but I just felt so depressed after being so ill).
I am very weak, but I find I am putting in about a pound per day.
Has anyone else had this experience ? I can believe the sudden weight loss has improved the blood sugar, but what can I do to make sure this lasts?
My arms and legs have wasted away, so I cannot really go on a diet.
Also have just had a very painful attack of gout.
Regards
Andrew

Glad to hear you are home and on the road to recovery.
Gentle exercise to build up your muscles again would be a start and finding some alternatives to the weight gaining foods you are eating (hard at the moment I know) Then hopefully this will keep your numbers down.
Welcome to the forum as well.

Welcome Andrewlincs,

So sorry to hear about what you've been through of late. I can understand eating whatever you please as it must be quite a stressful time at the moment.

The good thing is that you're aware of the situation and how it's impacting your body. I know it's easier said than done but looking at your food can not only improve your BS but also your mood. Gentle exercises and looking at foods that you enjoy which don't spike your BS could be a great place to start as you've already made progress.

Don't forget that you can always reach out to our helpline for support and ideas on the best way forward > 0345 123 2399, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Hi @Andrewlincs Welcome to the forum. Re the gout, I had gout-like symptoms when I substituted nuts for carbohydrate snacks - joint pain in my toe. At least this is what the GP and I finally deduced. The protein in the nuts causing an accumulation of uric acid in the joints of my big toe. If I feel it coming on, I leave off nuts for a few days. Hope this tip may be of help.
Best of luck in balancing your weight, exercise and blood sugar going forward.
Nick
