Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi new to the forum been reading some good advice. I've been Type 2 since 2006 had excellent control on diet and exercise. This last year HB1Ac gone up just had a result of over 90, also have got protein in water which I have had for ages. I've been given Metformin to take and going for renal ultrasound. After reading the forum I have started low carb diet. I have the carbs and cal book and track food on an app. I walk every day, do weights and go to gym when we are allowed. What I was wondering if I feel hungry on low carb what can eat as a good snack because I thought it wasn't good to feel hungry when diabetic. I know my body will take time to get used to the low carb diet.
Thanks for any help 🙂

Why do you think it's not good to feel hungry when diabetic?

Could you not fill up more with your meals?

But if you must snack then low carb things include - cheese, boiled eggs, cold meats, some nuts, cucumber, celery, even a couple of squares of high cocoa % chocolate (the higher the cocoa % the lower the carbs) Lidl do a really nice 95% although I know many can't tolerate that strong, sugar free jelly, there are probably loads more you could have

Are you testing your BG at all?
xx

Try adding more good fats to your meals to compensate for lack of carbs. Keeps you feeling fuller for longer! Try adding avocado, nuts, cheese etc. As a treat add a dollop of fresh double cream.

@paulajw69 - don't do anything very drastic with your diet yet until you have the kidney tests results. They'd usually order blood tests as well when investigating kidney function - such things as albumin/creatnine and eGFR at least - or have you had these already?

Certainly cutting down on carb consumption is a good idea generally - just don't cut down too much too quickly though, cos you can cause yourself too many other probs by trying to cut them all out in one fell swoop. Things like spuds - have less and the same with rice or pasta - say you have x heaped serving spoons of it, have rounded or flat spoonfuls of them instead to start with.

Start with snacks between meals - when you feel the need, don't just automatically grab a snack, get yourself a drink, and drink it and see if the need for the biscuit has passed.

Can't create a masterpiece in 10 minutes!

Feeling hungry works for me.
Not feeling hungry, and eating anytime I wanted to put on a ton of weight and caused my diabetes.
Losing the fat reversed it.

Hi I have had kidney function blood tests and all the others . Thank you for your suggestions. Today I had cottage pie for tea and added cheese to it , at lunch I had vegetables and cooked meat but missed out potatoes. I don't eat biscuits it's more fruit or I do enjoy crisps but have cut crisps out. I had oat cake instead. Thanks

Hi Kayla
l was told years ago to not go hungry to keep stable. I know methods and advice change. I was adviced not to test BG too much so I stopped doing it.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I've settled on only snacking on nuts, either in the form of nut bars (Nature Valley, KIND, ALDI's own or Trek) or packs of Graze (Chilli & Lime being my favourite).
Hi Anitram
Thanks I will have a look in the shops for some to try.

Well done on reversing your diabetes. I have put weight on in lockdown which now I'm trying to lose. It's been difficult with gyms shutting. I walk and do You Tube videos instead.

Hi Paula
I love crisps too but I try and steer clear (mostly!) - I quite like Kallo low fat corn cakes - they are a bit like light compressed popcorn. 26 cal per corn cake and 5.9g carb.

That's the only thing that I 'knew' about diabetes before I was diagnosed, that you had to never go hungry and eat very regular meals and look after yourself. I wonder where these ideas come from? Also, that Type 1 you were born with it and Type 2 was self-inflicted.

I was never told to keep eating by any HCP.
Stop eating tubby was the usual advice.
I wish I'd listened

I eat low carb and hunger is not something that happens to me.
Two meals a day at 12 hour intervals, coffee with cream, and whilst there is always something I could eat in the fridge, I just don't think about it.

Pork scratchings are my snack of choice
