Hi all I'm Zoe 44 and not diagnosed with diabetes or anything but thought I would ask some advice. We have a home test kit for blood sugars and my partner asked me to check his the other day which I did but then decided I would check mine too just out of curiosity but knew it would be ok. To my surprise is came back at 9.8 so for the past few week I've been monitoring it, my lowest reading was 3.5, my highest 9.8 but out of 21 readings I've had 5 that have been normal.(between 4 and 7)the rest have been higher than they prob should be. What to do now? Do I need to see the doctor or is it fine and just need to work on a better diet? I know it's not exceptionally high but no idea on what's ok really or what to do. Any help would be so gratefully received.

Hi, @ZoeC20 , welcome to the forum. It’s perfectly normal for .a non diabics blood glucose to fluctuate as yours has.
A diabetics glucose levels doesn’t normally come down as quickly as a non Ds would.

The best thing to do if either of you is at all worried, is to chat to your Gp.if they think it’s necessary they will take a blood sample to do some tests on one of which will be the Hb1ac, Which is able to diagnose diabetes, the glucose meter you have is not able to do this as it only tests our glucose levels for that particular moment.
I hope this helps

It depends a bit on when you test. It's not very unusual for a non-diabetic to see readings in the 9's or higher soon after eating but if you often see those levels a couple of hours or more after eating it could perhaps be a sign of a bit of insulin resistance. Would not be anything to panic about but maybe useful as a spur to look at diet, weight, exercise etc.

Anyway, talk to yr doc if you have any concerns.

BTW, the 4-7 range for "normals" does refer to before-eating situations (ie quite a while since you last ate).

Hi @ZoeC20, welcome to the forum!

You've got some great advice above which I totally agree with. Although it's not abnormal, if you're worried, there's no harm in getting things checked out.

Whether you have diabetes or not, it's a great idea to improve your diet as you may experience symptoms when your blood sugar is high that have gone unnoticed such as feeling tired.

Either way, we're here to support you so have a think and let us know if there's anything else we can help with.

Welcome to the forum @ZoeC20. 🙂

I agree with the above that it's best to contact your GP if you have any concerns about your glucose results. I'm hoping they turn out to be a false alarm.

Are you washing your hands or rinsing your fingers before every test? It's anecdotal, but I sometimes get inaccurate readings if I haven't washed my hands beforehand.

The home blood glucose meters aren’t for diagnosis. They’re for people with diabetes really to see how their control is. It’s best to speak to your GP and arrange an HbA1C test if you’re concerned. This will give you a diagnosis or reassure you that all’s normal.

In a person without diabetes, blood sugar goes up and down normally. It can go as high as the 10s.

When I was diagnosed my blood sugar was approaching 30.

Welcome to the forum @ZoeC20

Let us know how you get on if your GP recommends an HbA1c 🙂
