Good grief - been about a million years since I ever saw a raw beetroot for sale, I did think, cos we have A Lot of farmland in Warwickshire there would be Farm Shops not on the doorstep, but within reasonable striking distance but No, used to be one at Hoar Park approx 40 mins drive, but Hoar Park morfed into a Craft Centre getting on for 10 years ago. Same as a butchers - there isn't one! So, if they don't sell whatever in a supermarket we can get to, we don't get it. And of course having been banned from supermarket shopping by our daughters last March before the official lockdown happened we have to rely on them to get a list we have to send them. One is really good being a chef with grandkids by this time so if she sees anything she thinks she likes the look of but it isn't on the list, she'd most likely get it whereas her younger sister who has done most of it, not having a job doesn't have that nous. She herself can only get what she can afford and that's that. And why she and her kids find eg higher meat lower carb content sausages horrible of course. So HER grandchild doesn't get offered anything better. And they wonder why so many people have unhealthy diets these days.

My parents were by no means well off ever, hence we had less of whatever, but that whatever was normally more than decent quality whatever!

Turned into a rant; sorry!

Anyway, you can actually keep your raw beetroot - peeling them after boiling is a job I absolutely never want, nor the pong of it cooking stinking the house out, thanks. It's a very small bungalow. Smells whether nice or not so, literally get everywhere and friends have often commented eg lovely aroma of nutmeg in your front porch! Yeah, been cooking red cabbage - what about the cinnamon though? LOL

Sauerkraut, unsurprisingly from the name, tastes a tad sour !! Some like it; some don't. I personally don't. Never experienced Kimchi. Neither seen any nor tried it.

Beetroot are often available from the vegetable box which is delivered weekly.
And I usually roast them after which the skins are incredibly easy to remove.
As for the smell, roasting reduces the smell significantly. If I was to care about cooking smells permeate my house (a small 2-up 2 down), I would miss out on fish, curry, cakes, bread and my partner would miss out on all meat.

Kimchi. Neither seen any nor tried it.
Last time I was in the US (my last overseas trip in March, this year), my hotel was next door to a huge, amazing Korean supermarket. They sold gallon containers of Kimchi as well as other fascinating food which I bought and heated in the hotel microwave to avoid eating out.
I didn't buy the gallon of Kimchi, though.

They sell it in all of the major supermarkets here.
It’s fermented cabbage. I know that doesn’t sound nice but it’s yummy. Usually has a real chilli kick to it too.

Just for info, onions and beetroot both contain pure sugar. That’s why onions brown when you fry them, the Maillard reaction. Much of our table sugar comes from sugar beet, a close cousin of beetroot, so pickled or not they do have carbs on board.

@ColinUK I thought caraway seed were an integral part of sauerkraut! When I used to eat it in Austria (in the days when I skied) it always had caraway seeds in it. Haven't had any for ages. Does anyone know if Lidl sell Sauerkraut and/or Kimchi The latter is something i have been wanting to try for a while as I have a much greater appreciation for sourness since I changed my diet.

You can get kimchi from Tesco and Asda. Neither are very good, Tesco’s is watery and horrible. You would be better off looking on Amazon for the real eye watering Korean kimchi. Or making your own, which takes time, but is interesting. Then you get what you want, not what the supermarkets think you want.

Tesco have raw organic beetroot available at the moment, according to the website.
My father grew it on his allotment, I have to agree with TW about the smell when boiling, plus a horribly messy pan to clean, and red hands from peeling. Baking is an excellent tip, I must try that sometime.

23g/100g seems lot, your not confusing whole weight including liquid.

Jar in fridge says 8.9/100g, says dry weight in brackets, just weighed 100g out on scales & it was 3 beets size of small egg, so not high at 3.3g per beet.
It was just a sample of the jars on the shelf in the supermarket, I’m in Germany so a rough guess there was maybe 20 varieties on the shelf not to mention more or less every other vegetable you can imagine and more you can’t, Germans love pickles lol

Lidl certainly sell sauerkraut.

Lidl certainly sell sauerkraut.
I must be missing it! Just been tonight and didn't see any. Is it with the other pickles or on a specialist aisle?

Saw the German Xmas gherkin Xmas tree ornament in all it's glory for the first time on a telly programme last night. Sums up the affinity of Germans and pickles really!! Gave us a real belly laugh - our kids and grandkids only know how to look for the chocolate ....... right disappointed this year (us not them LOL) with a. us not being able to get any plus b. them not being able to come here. Roll on a couple of jabs in both our arms, NB not at Dignitas ....

I’ll make a point of going to Lidl later (between Waitrose and Fortnums darling) and seeing what I can find.
I’ll take photos 🙂

Colin, you are a total star. I hate to lower the tone of your day's shopping! You will be wearing a mask no doubt though, so hopefully no one will recognise you!

I remember when Lidl first opened and was considered very much a bargain basement discount store and I bumped into a colleague in there and I think we were both a bit embarrassed to be caught shopping there.
Now it is pretty much the only place I go and of course lots of us love shopping there and some of the produce is really top quality.

I’m seriously impressed by their steaks and the cheese selection in there.
I’ll wear a head to toe disguise never you fear!

I must confess that I buy a lot of cheese and I really love their selection. If you can get some of their Cornish Blue that is yum but not available very often. I also love the Gorgonzola Piccante they sell and their Blue Stilton which is a staple on my list..... having spent my whole life loathing blue cheese, it has become my new chocolate!

The minted lamb steaks are nice as well as the beef.

Never been a fan of blue cheese but they do a rather tasty aged Gouda.
