I have to own up to being a Bad Vonny today. I had my first sweet thing since April, a Baileys and toffee cream choux bun from Cooplands when I was getting my dad's lunch today. As you may know I don't really have a sweet tooth but toffee is one of my downfalls. They tend to have them in Cooplands at this time of year and I've resisted for the past few weeks, but decided to celebrate getting snugly into size 10 jeans by treating self.

Sorry to ramble, the point of this story is that I've just done my bloods 2 hours after scoffing it and the reading is 5.6. Admittedly I did my 3 mile walk at 3:30pm, and have covered 7 miles in total today. What do people think? Is the the exercise which has brought what should have been a nightmare reading down, or are choux buns ok? I'm quite perplexed as I fully expected to be up at 12 bearing in mind that a slice of white bread spikes it to that.

I'm trying hard not to hate myself for chucking myself off the wagon so spectacularly and am shamefacedly climbing back on it 😱

Actually your choux bun wasn't a bad choice. Eclairs which are pretty much the same thing are one of the suggested cream cakes to choose for diabetics as they are mostly cream with very little actual weight of carbs in them.... interestingly cream meringues for all their sugar content can also be a better choice than cake or tarts or cheesecake because they are mostly air.
Don't beat yourself up and treat yourself to a choux bun once every month or two and enjoy it ... and being a size 10 again.... I'm jealous as I am not quite down to my size 10 jeans... Can get into them and JUST fasten them with a struggle but the resulting muffin top is not a good look and would definitely be wary of sitting down in them!

Thanks for the advice, this is really good news that I can have one every so often, probably 3 times a year on previous form!

As for the jeans, "snug" is the operative word! I can only get away with them with a big floppy top. If it's a tight top I need to revert to my size 12s 😉

Well that's what I'll be doing Christmas day after dinner, eat like king then good long walk, always lowers bg for me.

Baileys do chocolate log this time of year, got one other day in Sainsburys, looks tempting but will wait till 25th.

I think you should do more tasting Er testing lol.
I am drooling.

Asda used to do a really gorgeous toffee choux bun twin pack.... from my dim and distant memory!

If the bun contained cream, the fat could slow down the digestion of the carbs. The peak could be later than 2 hours after eating.

I love a choux anything with fresh cream for the exact reason you just discovered! Also fresh cream meringues, cos of the air as already mentioned, but they are a LOT scarcer these days than the previous 65 ish years. The previous 5 years to that I doubt if I ever saw a fresh cream anything TBH cos luxury foods were rare and some things still on ration.

@helli - just not enough carb in em, all in all, to get a late peak.

Tesco's fresh cream choc eclairs, the smaller 4 to a packet ones, are exactly 12g carb apiece and of course , can be enjoyed for 2 days on the trot for a couple, What a bargain!
