Hearing more and more about the positive impacts on Covid risk of Vit D, and according to breakfast TV supplements will be offered to those at higher risk of C19 are to be offered free supplements from their GP.

I’m not sure if it applies to all PWD, but might be worth asking?

Why not ask.

Growing evidence that low levels of Vit D is found in people who develop autoimmune conditions like diabetes MS, urge anyone to have levels checked & supplement if low, even taking one wont do much harm as long as don't exceed limit.

I’m recovering from a broken leg since February and I’ve been using a vitamin D supplement recently because my orthopaedic surgeon did some bloods and found I was completely deficient in vitamin D despite being in the sun a lot during the summer. It’s something most diabetics should keep an eye on especially if your body is needing it for something

You can buy VitD supplements in Lidl at a very cheap price if anyone wants to go down that route.

I bought some from Savers, but at £1.89 wasn't sure how efficacious they were. I swapped them for some Glucosamin Chondroitin with vits C, E, B12 and D plus ginger and minerals. I've probably fallen foul of the adage that you get what you pay for, as they cost £28 from Boots! 😱

Bought 90 multivitamin tablets from Asda for about £6. One tasty chewable tablet a day. Contains all the vitamin D needed plus most other main vitamins.

I’ve got a Vit D spray with added K2. I think it was £6 or £7. Hopefully it’s doing it’s job. I do think you get what you pay for to some extent and that some formulations are better than others.

Before this, I had some special capsules, which were almost too effective as they put my Vit D right up and so I stopped taking them.

My old GP issued vitamin D on prescription to the over 65s but since we moved the new one doesn’t. Must put them on my Tesco list. I’ve just been reading about the vaccine that diabetics will access after the care homes etc. We still wouldn’t get any benefit for up to 4 weeks after it so we’re having a lockdown Christmas

I did not think they had decided on the groups with illnesses, I thought they had only started on age groups, going through the oldest downwards.

I read the draft document giving the priorities yesterday, diabetics were included in the vulnerable group both T1 and T2, which came about 6th in the prioritisation, after the health and care staff, older age groups, and extremely vulnerable group

That is strange as a group Diabetic weren't deemed vulnerable because of Diabetes alone before, but I doubt it would make any difference to me, as my age group were already in the list previously released. I also don't expect it any time soo either.

We were in the vulnerable group before not the extremely vulnerable group, so nothing has changed. Though they have changed the wording of the two groups a few times which can confuse people.

I starting popping a multi vitamin with my breakfast after reading about deficiencies of vitamins D and B12. I know people say you should get everything you need from your diet, and I think I do with a lot of it, but that's sometimes a challenge, especially with vitamin D.

Martin

Whilst I always felt the same as you Antrim, in terms of a decent diet giving us all we need, but 2 or 3 years ago I had a bit of a shocker when my natural (i.e. not supplemented) level of Vit D plummeted from 99 to 21 in a handful of months.

At the point, my GP prescribed a loading does of VitD, which I didn't take. I did some reading and decided upon Vit D3, with K2, for the bio-availability. Aside from when I spend 3 months in the sun, in winter (sadly not this year, for obvious reasons), I supplement throughout the year.

The Vitamin D Council (https://www.vitamindsociety.org/) makes for interesting reading, particularly relating to desirable and optimal levels.

If you are curious about your Vit D levels there are lots of reliable tests available if you GP can't or won't do one for you.

I was prescribed a course from the GP last year as my bloods showed I wasn’t getting enough.

I now take 1 every morning just to help and on his advice.
