I am not a newbie, have belonged to the site for a number of years. Type 2, managed (sort of) with drugs but now the day has come to start on insulin, a couple of days after my 70th in two weeks time. Happy birthday me, eh?
What I would like is to link up with someone in similar position, just getting started, someone who understands what it's like, the ups and downs and so on, to keep in touch via email, not the site, just whenever we feel the need to talk to someone at the same stage of this illness as myself. Any takers?

Hi there 🙂

I'm not sure of anyone in the same position as you at the moment but if I come across anything I'll be sure to mention you

Yes Type 1 and starting insulin was a week early birthday present for me too, not the most thoughtful gift eh?

How are you feeling about moving on to insulin? Do you know yet which insulin(s) you will be using? basal/bolus regime? or a mixed insulin? There are a few Type 2 members on insulin
xx

Good luck, I’m not just starting so can’t be that person but insulin was the best treatment I’ve ever used for my diabetes, and isn’t something to be feared.

As for what type of insulin, it's all double dutch to me! As for how I feel about moving onto insulin.... a bit scared, ridiculous at my age and considering what I have been through in the past, this should really be a walk in the park. But it's the unknown, and whilst I am not afraid of needles - anyone will tell you that if you can get through the awfulness of dialysis and the huge needles they use, then this should be easy - I have skin problems, and bruise even just pricking my finger. I worry I will get confused about dosage etc., as my head isn't as good as it was and I have trouble sometimes getting my knickers the right way round!
Still it will all be explained to me in a couple of weeks time, but thank you for responding.

Just a few words from you, but they have eased my worries somewhat so thank you. Can I ask how it affected you physically when you first started, have there been any negatives and what were the positives, if you have time. Thanks.

They start you on a very low dose usually and build it up, so gradually as I got to the right dose and better blood sugars I felt less tired, more energetic and awake, was able to do more things and stopped picking up illnesses all the time, less peeing and drinking, etc. Of course it’s a lot of work with keeping a record of blood sugars, insulin doses, counting carbs, but it was worth it. Insulin doesn’t have side effects like other medications do, other than can cause hypos sometimes. Always keep something with you to test bg and fix the hypos.

Good luck with your transition to insulin @Ditzyoldme

Hopefully you will feel it is a positive move, and makes your blood glucose more manageable (like it does when you start after a T1 diagnosis when it often comes as a huge relief!)
