I spend most of my day sitting. Sitting crocheting, sitting reading, spend most of my time sitting in front of my computer. This means I suffer with swollen legs. Now, with all this sitting, which, as you might have gathered, is a life style, is there perhaps a prop for my feet that would lessen the water retention and swelling?

Let me add to the above that I am almost 80, have never liked exercising partly because I have an imbalance problem and because I find exercising as deadly boring.

Any constructive advice in the offing?

Would a foot stool or something similar help?

I’ve been seeing ‘standing desks’ becoming more popular in recent years - perhaps there might be a way of altering some of your shorter sitting activities into standing ones to give your legs a break while you are still busy with your activity (so it doesn’t feel like ‘exercise’)?

Bless you. its not nice. hope you start feeling better soon.

what about a stepping machine - no impact on your joints but gets your heart rate up which would help with fatique.

Good day to you. That is just what I am wanting to know. Would a foot stool help? Silly me. Just had a thought. Instead of coming into the forum and asking advice about the leg swelling problem I should just have gone on Google. Will find out about the foot stool.

I wonder if there are some exercises that can be done while reading a book? That would not be boring..... no running on the spot, or a step machine.

I wonder if belly dancing can be done at my age? Go to Google darling, go to Google. Belly dancing for the over 80's, done in the privacy of your home, free on line. I bet something like that exists on Youtube.

You can move your feet up and down, do circles with them in each direction. This should help with the circulation.

Yes, I Googled about foot stools, and yes they do help. Not having one right now I will settle for a cardboard box with a cushion on it. That should work.

And the Belly Dancing bit. Great stuff on Youtube. Yes, there are free exercises for the over 50's. Am learning how to swivel my hips, standing still in one place, and moving arms at same time. Slow going, am in no hurry.

Do you have a perching stool? If not would one help do you think? If it's an option ask your GP for a referral to occupational health who will provide you one free of charge.

Hello Pumper_Sue. Never heard of a perching stool. Thank you, I will look into it.🙂

According to my consultant your feet should be above your hips and cushions behind your calf not behind the knee. Also exercises pointing the toes forward and back 10 times every hour while they are up helps the circulation therefor reduces the swelling. Costs nothing and worth a try.

Teresa, Sometime ago I saw a TV advert for an expensive foot massager, amongst other ‘benefits’ the guy in the advert (I think he was a cricketer) mentioned diabetes. Very interested I rang my hospital diabetic nurse for advise, she said, “absolutely NOT” I mention it to say check first if you’re considering it.
My latest foot/ankle improver is a rolling pin on the floor, recommended by my Physiotherapist, to roll back and forth with my foot. Good luck!
