Hi Everyone,
New to the forum so be nice, been type 1 since the age of 3 now 31, will try and help where possible, feel free to asked questions, I've never really talked about my diabetes as much as probably should, does anyone know whether there are support groups running atm in Essex area?

Thanks for your help in advance
Sam

Hi @Samsheekey and welcome to the forum. First off, if anybody is not nice on the forum then they get a good talking to from the moderators, so no problems on that score.

I'm a T2 so I tend to keep out of T1 conversations but one thing I have noticed is that those who have had T1 from childhood are very helpful when it comes to offering practical advice to those who are diagnosed later in life so feel free to contribute your experiences to any threads on the forum. Anything you want ideas on, then just ask.

Hello @Samsheeeky and so good that you have decided to join the forum. If you have a browse around you will see that there are wide range of topics and discussions going on, and I hope you find something of interest.

There is a place on the main DUK site where you can check for location of groups
I think many groups are still running meetings via ZOOM etc.

Hi Sam and welcome from a much less experienced Type 1.

I am a late starter, 20 months ago at the age of 55, but managing pretty well thanks to the fantastic support and advice on this forum. Hope you are able to add to that knowledge resource as well as gain from it.

Would you like to tell us a bit more about your management regime? Are you on MDI or a pump... do you have Libre etc?

Look forward to reading more about you.

Welcome to the forum @Samsheekey .
Like @rebrascora i am a late starter with T1.
I am amazed at the changes I have seen in the tech just in the past 13 years.
For you those be even more evident as you started so Young.

I look forward to hearing more from you.
Are you on MDI or a pump.

Hi
Well I've never been one to ask for help as much as I probably should In regards to regime I'm still using blood glucose monitors aswell as lantis and novorapid injections that have always worked well for me.
I've found it alot easier getting older to control my diabetes alot better than it was when I was younger and can normally tell hypos or symptoms of one quite early now.
I'm open to suggestions or I can try to give advise to anyone thats wants it but I don't consider myself a buff on diabetes I've simply just got on with it as had it from such a early age its not even 2nd nature anymore its my way of life.

Thanks for all the suggestions gives I will look into these

Haha I started with once used injections with the orange caps with needles the size of my little finger, had to practise when I was younger injecting into a orange so I would know how it felt.
The technology is amazing now it really is and looking into the future i really feel it can only get better and easier for us all.

Hi @samsheeky - I asked the nurse telling me to practise injecting into an orange if she truly believed the inside of an orange would communicate with my own nervous system? She just looked at me speechless - and I said, No - I didn't think so either! and we both laughed.

Swear I had knitting needles thinner than the old needles for the glass syringes - or if that's a exaggeration, darning needles.

Yeh they were huge! I remember filling up large milk cartons with the old needles as they never used to have anything else big enough to put more than 5 in! Had to take them to the hospital to dispose off, looked a right wolley walking round with that.

They were big and rather long, weren't they? The modern 4mm 32G needles are so much nicer to use!
Yes used these now I thought they had smaller ones but got told they used to leak but this was a few years ago so probably moved on again now, but so much better than they used to be!

Pointed at both ends in the case of knitting needles, cos the thinnest ones were for cylindrical garments or eg picking up the stitches around a neck. They were longer it's true but think the steel syringe ones were 17mm but dunno what gauge, it wasn't something that meant anything to your average patient in those days. Nor was it supposed to.

All 4mm now cos they proved unles you're an armadillo and not human, 4mm was sufficient to get right the way through anyone's epidermis - BUT! - you are sposed to wait 2 jiffs, before withdrawing the needle after jabbing.

I still have 8mms as syringes for my emergency pump backup! Somehow I just can’t come to terms with the 4mm ones 😱

Welcome to the forum @Samsheekey

I’m a year or two ahead of you in diabetes mileage, and *ahem* a year or two more that that ahead in age :D

Feel free to chip in to the conversations, or ask away if there are any gizmos, gadgets or insulins you’ve not tried yet - we have members who have had a go with most things 🙂

Thankfully, I declined the option of the glass syringes - and opted for the (back then I think were fairly new) disposable plastic ones, with 12mm needles. 6mm were a lot better, and now 4mm are hardly noticeable LOL. Wonder what pump cannula setups are like in comparison? LOL.
