Just seen a tweet saying the Libre 2 is coming soon to the UK. Libre 3 has been granted the CE mark.

Yeah Partha Karr posted on Facebook a week past Friday saying the Libre 2 was coming to the NHS and they were in advanced talks with CCG's xx

It's a bit smaller, I think.

I have no idea what the size of the US coun is!

According to wikipedia a US penny has a diameter of 19.05mm and thickness of 1.52mm. So two of them would have a thickness of 3.04mm. Current Libre has diameter 35mm and thickness of 5mm. (Presumably none of those are precise indications of the real sizes, but they suggest they've made Libre 3 smaller enough to notice.)

Libre 2 has alerts, and should be rolled out in a few months. Libre 3 is a CGM and will be here in about two years I would say.

Thanks all. While it sounds great I think I'd be happy with Libre 2 for now.

In feature terms I'm OK with Libre. (I don't really need alarms, I think.) But a smaller (especially thinner) one would be nice (would reduce the occasional catching of it as I take off shirts and that kind of thing).

(My guess is that technically the Libre 2 sensor can act as a CGM: that this is what they're selling as the sports variant and that there's just a bit of a delay before they can sell it as a medical device that can do CGM properly. And the Libre 3 shrinks it all a bit, and I imagine by then the regulatory hurdles will have been overcome and it'll be a CGM. But I'm basing that on a few tweets and some guesswork, so it may well not be correct. And I'm not sure I care much anyway since the original Libre does enough for me, most of the time.)

I am pleased to see the releases of new tech, but I wish I knew what was stalling the rollout of Libre2.

It‘s been available in Germany for ages - over a year I think - and when I last spoke to Abbott they weren’t promising... but neither were they coming up with multiple reasons why it might be delayed, or have clarity of what they were waiting for.

It appears to be nearing approval (and I assume starting actual prescribing in place of Libre). (I'm not sure how long this usually takes but since the price is the same it seems like an easy decision. I imagine there'll be supply limits to begin with so I'm not sure how it'll all work out.)

Thanks Bruce - Yes I saw that tweet earlier, then had an email with an announcement about Libre 3 (though hadn’t done more than skim-read it)

Interesting times!

It seems like an age since the Libre 2 was promised. I have been using the Libre about 18 months and I am sure there had been talk of the 2 coming before that!

Very similar to libre 1 sensor.

Libre 4 will more than likely be implanted (invisible).

Mr Vallance discusses the future of medicine and monitoring here in this presentation he gave.

Not before time, good if it were licensed to wear on other parts of body than just arms.
