Relationship to Diabetes
Other Type
Hi I've just joined the site for information etc., I've been told by 3 different consultants that I was type 1, type 2 and the last guy said it was secondary diabetes. I was diagnosed after having pancreatitis and sepsis. I'm on novarapid 14 in the morning and 12 with my evening meal. I think my levels are quite steady but I've been having occasional dizziness after I've had my lunch, and wondered if anyone else has experienced this, it passes off after a while. Anyone know why?

Hello @Kazza1234 welcome to the forum.

Have you got a meter to test your own blood sugars are you taking a long acting insulin also?
Are you due for another blood test three months after your last one and have you access to your
hospital team? Your dizziness could be due to many factors we are not allowed to give you any
medical advice but does sound familiar to most Diabetics on Insulin or T2 on blood sugar reducing
medication including Insulin.

Come back and let us know how you are coping and ask any question we are here for you.

If you had Pancreatitis and sepis , it may that you are more likely to be Type 3, which can occur following pancreatic damage and or removal. I suggest you do a forum search on Type 3.

Thanks for your replies, I tested my bloods 2 hours after lunch and it was 13.2 which is high for me but I was naughty and know that it was the bread that I ate that raised it. I was due a review in August and have been told there is a delay due to Covid and it will probably be October now, but I think I will call the hospital to discuss it. Thank you again

Welcome to the forum @Kazza1234

Do you take Creon as well as your insulin?

As @grovesy suggests, diabetes following pancreatitis is often Type 3c

This page may gove you some clues

We have a few type 3cs on the forum including @eggyg who may be able to give you some pointers 🙂

Hi thanks for your reply, no I have only been given the Novomix. I did look up type 3c, you would think the consultants would have said that instead . I will be ringing them to see if I can get my August review sooner rather than later, by yours and someone else's response I'm guessing I might need something else on top of the Novomix.

The Consultant might not be familiar with it is not universal understood. We have had people who have their pancreas or part of it removed and not warned about it.

Novomix and Novorapid are quite different insulins... Novomix has a combination of rapid acting and intermediate acting insulins, and is usually dosed twice a day. Novorapid is a rapid acting insulin analogue and is usually taken before meals 🙂

Hi and welcome @Kazza1234. It does sound more like you are type 3C, like me, although mine was caused by surgery to the pancreas. It’s probably highly unlikely that your health care professionals know anything about it. Mine didn’t, I was pigeon holed as a type 2 for many years. I started on the mixed insulin on fixed doses, just like you, it was only through this forum that I heard about Type 3C and subsequently a basal/ bolus insulin regime, which is a background insulin and a fast acting insulin. After I persuaded my DSN to put me on that my numbers came down and I felt better in my self. I would firstly do lots of research on Type 3c, it is becoming more widely known about, and go armed to your review with that information and ask them about changing your insulin needs. Good luck and any questions, how ever daft, fire away.
Oh and if you’re not on Creon, which is an enzyme supplement, if your pancreas is damaged through the pancreatitis you won’t be digesting your food correctly, ask about that to. That would probably give you immediate feeling of well being. Elaine.

Hi Elaine
Thank you for your reply, it's very helpful. In the main I feel well, my sugars go between 5 and 7.2, which I think is ok. But I have been occasionally experiencing a dizziness, light headed feeling after my lunch, not every day, just now and then and can't understand why, did this ever happen to you?
Thank you. Karen

Can’t say I do. Don’t assume everything is to do with your diabetes, it could be totally unrelated. Have you checked your blood pressure when you feel like that? It could be a bit low. They will check your BP at your review but quite often it’s higher when you’re in a medical situation. White coat syndrome. Do you have chronic pancreatitis or acute? Could it be that your not getting the sustenance from your food which is making you light headed? Best to mention it to the doc.
