c54% of the population in Peckham is black (African and Caribbean), c32% white and the rest are from other ethnic backgrounds. My experience of living in such an vibrant ethnically diverse community has been overwhelmingly positive. 🙂
Never suggested anything different, I used to have an office in Camberwell, stayed in the Peckham area for a couple of years, very vibrant community.

I saw my doctor this morning and she said 'I'm sorry but you've only got five to live'. I replied what do you mean 'Years, months weeks?' She came back and said '4, 3, 2 1' 😛

but as a paid up resident of double-hard Peckham
I used to live in Peckham..... In the middle of one of those huge council estates just south of Burgess Park (I believe it's been demolished now)...... Not a good place in the 80's

I cycle through Burgess Park on my way to and from work. It's recently undergone a multi-million pound overhaul and is absolutely splendid. The lake has been extended, there's an outdoor gym, a cycle/running track around the entire park with gym equipment at intervals, a huge BMX facility, a tennis club, a fantastic playground, picnic areas with barbecues, a great cafe and conference centre, an education/art facility, community gardening...and the whole park has been sculpted, landscaped and lavishly planted. The Aylesbury Estate is gradually being redeveloped, but most of it is still intact...in all its gritty glory. East Street market is still going strong too. It's where I buy my fruit and veg.

🙂 Years ago when I was a youngster I usd to live a stones throw from the Lane (east street market) as we called it. Have fond memories , the Saspaprilla man yes real saspaprilla not the muck sold today. the Italian ice cream shop at the top of the lane, the smell of roasting chestnuts at Christmas time. Watching The cons going on and the general hubbub ahh the memories.
I believe but am not totally sure that it was the first open air street market

I thought for people not close enough to visit the Lane and wondering what all my fuss was about might want to watch this video. The only thing that's different now is that when I was growing up, there was no foreign goods or foods , now their is no Saspaprilla man and the Italian ice cream shop has gone.

The Sasparilla Man still comes to the market on the odd occasion, but only when the weather is really hot. You can buy the cordial at Baldwins on Walworth Road. There's a pub on East Street called The Good Intent, but everyone calls it The Last Resort. The landlord is old school in that he doesn't seem to have heard about the smoking ban, hygiene rules or health and safety...and the punters share his disregard for the law. A drink there is a real trip down memory lane. 😱

Nothing like a hot Saspaprilla on a freezing cold winters day .
That pub sounds very familiar lol.
