I think the hardest thing is understanding how foods work i.e I need to lose weight so if I look at the lidl roll I had at lunch, 11 carbs great, 335 calories not so good, also when I was in hospital rice crispies were on the breakfast menu for diabetics, now I've seen how many carbs in them and know how my body reacts to them they will have to come off my shopping list. I've learnt so much in the 3 weeks or so I've been using this site. many thanks to you all 🙂🙂🙂

Alan - by lowering your carb count you will naturally reduce your calories so don't sweat it.

Once your body gets used to not having an easy source of energy it will look elsewhere.

My body has a plentiful alternative source of fuel without me feeding it! 😳

Yes to everything said already.

The reason we eat carbs is because the body needs glucose (and insulin is the 'key' that opens the 'cell doors' to admit the glucose so the cells can work) and carbs are a VERY easy and quick source of glucose. Yes?

However - if it doesn't get enough carbs to function easily from them - the body can also convert some of both protein and fat to glucose - but it has to work harder and it takes it longer to convert it.

Most T1s also do not have 'insulin resistance' (which means the body needs a lot more insulin than a non-D or a 'straight' T1 to do the job at all) - so in some ways for some people, T2 is harder to manage in the first place than T1.

However - I've said this before and I'll say it again! - because when something goes a bit awry with a T1 it hits mega quickly so we usually land up in the back of an ambulance sirens blaring breaking land speed records to get us into A&E and taking priority in the queue for treatment, whereas if a T2 makes the same kind of mistakes etc, they get ill slowly, without any drama or flashing blue lights, and land up having their kidneys fail and their legs dropping off etc cos nobody including them was aware there was a problem until it's gone too far.

In other words - we drop dead QUICKLY, T2's have a slow lingering painful death.

This becomes interpreted as T1 being 'worse' than T2.

That's a load of bollards - if I have to have one of them (and looks like I do LOL) - I'll keep the T1 thanks!

Calories are effectively irrelevant on a low carb diet. I've lost 4 inches round my waist in just over a month and I'm eating more fry-ups than I ever have before, not to mention all the cheese

TW - yes you're right. Having been educated over the last 3 month on the vagaries of type 1's and their control problems I do have to say my choice would be type 2 please! As a very sound sleeper I find the thought of a nighttime hypo terrifying!

Having said all that it is wise to remember that your kidneys could fail and your extremities may drop off regardless of which type you are (quickly including lada, mody, type 1 1/2 - is there a type 3?)

Whenever I'm in hospital, the only breakfast choices have been porridge, cereals or toast (with jam or marmalade of course); no low-carb or even medium-carb choices. Hospital is no place to be if you're ill. 🙄

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 so not much to offer but when I saw the nurse this week for me it was keep to 1200 calories a day and 100 carbs but I am only 5.1 weighing in at 77kg so it was a drastic change for my diet lol but trying my best. For men I think it used to be 1800 ? calories but that is dependant on your weight but not sure on the carbs. Hope someone can help you with that part of diet.

I can eat brown wholegrain basmati ok, but no other rice.
