I was diagnosed type 2 late May 2024. I had previously been made aware I was pre-diabetic but there did not seem any major concern raised.

Now I have been diagnosed as 2DM and I am a bit surprised at how really serious this is.

I immediately went into diet and lifestyle management, mainly diet as I have never restricted eating/drinking habits. I have gone from 16st 2 to 14st 11 in the last 6 weeks. I met with a diabetes nurse a week or so ago but that person seemed to be just box ticking and getting through a list of patients. I declined Metformin as I want to manage this through diet, if possible. I have stopped any alcohol and intend to get to about 12st where I will hopefully go into maintenance mode. I am a bit of a head on person so my intention is to reverse if possible. I exercise every day, walking for over 10,000 steps on average and using an exercise bike for intense exercise about 20-30 minutes a day. My eating habits are now using 16/8 programme and I have a limit of 1500 kcals and about 100/150 carbs per day. I use the nutracheck app to help me. My BP and pulse are both good.

I guess my intro question is - Am I doing this right and do I need to do anything else?

Welcome. I was also diagnosed type 2 late May 2024 (without ever knowing I was pre-diabetic) and I'm 2DM as well.

I'm also trying with diet and exercise, although I don't think I've ever walked 10,000 steps...in my life  I've lost weight, too, but I do take Metformin and it seems to be working fine on me. No serious side effects, either.

My goal is to drop my HbA1c level (currently 61 from 75 when I was diagnosed) and manage to stop medication and just work on diet and exercise.

I don't have any advice for you as I'm also very new at this. I just wanted to welcome you and read the replies you get 😎

Welcome to the forum @Dodge and really well done on your progress so far. You seem to be on the right track: exercise and low carb. That's the approach I went for and lost 5 stone, although I am still on metformin so can't be classed as in remission due to the medication, despite an hba1c of 39.
All diabetics are different, mind you, so what works for one may not for another. You seem to have found what works for you.
Keep up the great work!

Welcome to the forum @Dodge

Sounds like you have leapt into action and pulled out all the stops!

Hopefully with the combination of menu changes and the increased activity, plus giving up the drink (which can be a substantial additional source of both carbs and calories) will really help when you get your follow-up checks.

Different surgeries space these out differently, but it may be in approx 3 months time. The HbA1c check revolves around changes to red blood cells, and spacing results put 3 months apart reduces the overlap between the 2 tests, as red blood cells are recycled/replenished approx 120 days. So after 3 months you’ve pretty much got a new set 🙂

Sounds like you've got things sussed @Dodge and are doing all the right things. It took me 8 months from diagnosis to remission doing pretty much the same things that you are, so keep it up and hopefully you'll succeed too. Please keep us posted on your progress.

I'm no expert, but what you're doing sounds good. You seem very committed in your response.
