Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I am a big fan of chinese medicine as oftern they have been tested on humans for substantial amounts of time. I have heared of a herb formula call Yu Xiao San 8805 which claims to have good results for diabetes. Has anyone tried this at all?

This particular product has never been tested on human beings.

It is also worth pointing out that the manufacturer claims you need to take the product for at least 90 days. Given they have no human tests to verify this, it would be interesting to speculate why this would be the magic number, particularly as a month's supply costs $100.

It is also worth pointing out that the medication says that during treatment, you should "Avoid foods with high carbohydrate content. Avoid fatigue and stressful situations....Taken in conjunction with a balanced diet and regular exercise is recommended." Guess what? Doing that will improve your blood sugar control.

In any case, this product is outright dangerous. The claim is it works for 'diabetes'. There is no indication anywhere that if you have T1, you should continue taking insulin. This is dangerous because a T1 could start taking this in place of insulin and then end up on the morgue slab in 4 days from DKA.

There is NO tested, proven treatment for T1 other than insulin and there never will be until a method of blocking the immune reaction is discovered. I would say that on the face of it, this product is a waste of money. You wouldn't take a prescription tablet that had never been tested on people - why would you do so with this? 'Natural' is no guarantee of safety - cobras and sharks and nightshade and cyanide all are 'natural' too but certainly aren't safe.

I'm afraid I'm a bit sceptical of a 'traditional' herbal remedy from an ancient culture which seems have been developed relatively recently by Dr. Lian Jin Chong, is sold through 'Dr Chong's' brand and is formulated in California.

This product is classified as a food, not as medicine, and is not intended as a substitute for medication.

No reason to say that you would not see some effect from taking the tablets, but taking a completely inert pill may well have an effect too: http://www.everydayupsanddowns.co.uk/2012/02/placebo-effect-and-insulin-pumps.html

Sorry Andrew, in 30+ years I've yet to find an effective short cut to better diabetes control...the good news however is that you can get good control (albeit the old fashioned way) with either MDI /pump & good old fashioned testing & analysis of results...& at least you won't be lining the pockets of some cynical rip-off merchant. 🙂 Unfortunately diabetes seems to be an ideal condition for these sharks to target via peoples fears (life time, chronic, lots of scary potential complications & side effects etc!). Don't lose hope, but don't be duped either. X
