Type 2 diabetes was once known as ?adult-onset diabetes? ? but not anymore. Increasing rates of overweight and obese preteens and teenagers are leading to millions of young people being diagnosed with this disease, and a recent study shows that the United States is paying a hefty price.

The American Diabetes Association released new research last week estimating the annual cost of diabetes both in children and adults is $245 billion ? a 41 percent increase in costs since 2007.

The study, ?Economic Costs of Diabetes in the U.S. in 2012,? addresses the increased financial burden, health resources used, and lost productivity associated with diabetes in 2012.

Diabetes has reached ?epidemic proportions? in the U.S., according to the study. Approximately 26 million children and adults are living with the disease, and an additional 79 million are showing symptoms of prediabetes.
