Hi Please can you give me your opinions on this glucose tolerance test. Reason for this test is because I have been experiencing a lot of low blood glucose symptoms. I have been on a low carb diet because after I eat carbohydrates I feel extreme fatigue, drowsy, foggy and blurred vision. So by stopping carbs I have stopped these symptoms but I was getting low blood glucose symptoms and loosing weight and feel like I don’t have enough energy.

Since this test I’ve been advised to eat more carbs to put on weight I have started to this week but today I felt extremely unwell following lunch which had rice cakes chicken lots of vegetables, this is a lot of carbs for me and it brought back all the symptoms I was getting before and why I stopped them...I got extreme fatigue drowsy blurred vision all I could do was lay in this coma state it was horrible and it eased off after three hours. Your advice would be much appreciated thanks

Hi Boopsie. Well done for taking all them blood tests. When I go high or higher I don't feel right at all. I feel clogged up, slow, tired & not healthy. Those numbers are not too high & it is a bit different to T2. Where you active at all during these tests ? PS Welcome 🙂

Hi thanks for that. When I look at these results I’m sure my two hour result is higher than it should be.
Also it looks like somethings not right with my insulin for the first two hours but it’s like it’s starting to work after that. Could this be another form of diabetes?
I wasn’t active during this test I was lying in a bed all day
Thanks

Hi Boopsie and welcome to the forum. Yes, the 1 hour to 2.5 hours results are high. The 2.3 and 1.8 at 5 hours are very low. There is a condition called reactive hypoglycaemia. I'm not a doctor so I can't advise you on it. Was the OGTT done by your GP's or by yourself at home?

Hi thanks for your reply. It was done at a hospital. I have always had reactive hypoglycaemic but never was getting the higher blood sugars until more recently.
I thought diabetes was diagnosed with a glucose level over 11 at 2 hours? Im trying to work out what is causing this as if my insulin was working as it should would I go above 11 at 2 hours? Thanks

I think so. What did the hospital have to say about the test results?

They said that it could be insulin resistance causing the high glucose and that the hypo at 6 hours might be caused by something else. I want to find a specialist consultant who is familiar with all types of diabetes but searching on line is not turning out very good

It's certainly high so they could be right. Did they suggest anything for the insulin resistance? Metformin?

Hi yes that said go home and increase my carbs because I’m so under weight, which I reluctantly wanted to do due to the symptoms they cause. But I have done this and today felt so unwell.
They said to see them again and they will possibly try metformin but my concern is will this worsen the hypos I’m clearly getting, and could this be another type of diabetes as I do not have the classic signs of someone who is insulin resistant

From my understanding of metformin (I've never taken it myself) is it shouldn't cause hypos but improves insulin resistance. Your symptoms do sound complex and I'd certainly be pressing them to see a specialist.

Apart from Types 1 and 2 there are things like MODY but I would have thought most diabetes consultants should have knowledge of all types. I would guess you would need to go through your doctor/hospital to see a specialist.

Yes I do agree I’m under a specialist now but he doesn’t mention anything of the other types of diabetes so I’ll bring it up when I next see him
Thanks

Hope you can get things sorted. Good luck.

Really good luck 🙂

In the meantime - does the Team think, that choosing 'slower' release carbs (can't remember whether than means higher GL or lower GL so not using that description LOL) might help? Cost the rice cakes would certainly be pretty quick and when BG goes up quick, it comes down again a lot quicker too.

Hi thanks everyone. Today I’ve written a list of everything I eat and the carb, protein and fat content and also the calories as I need at least 2000 to put on weight again. It’s hard because I’m aiming for 450-500 calories a meal and the remainder in snacks but I’m gluten and dairy free and trying to reduce the carbs per meal so I’m finding it hard to know what I can eat so I can get a good amount of calories at each meal without going to high carb. Does anyone have any advice please. Thanks
