Growing numbers of body-conscious diabetics are risking their lives by skipping insulin to avoid gaining weight, a leading doctor warned today.
Dr Stephen Thomas, head of London’s Diabetes Strategic Clinical Network at NHS England (London), said “diabulimia” can lead to organ failure, infertility and even death.
He explained that more support was needed, as well as awareness of the condition among GPs, nurses and healthcare professionals.
Dr Thomas said: “Routinely omitting insulin leads to poorly controlled diabetes, which can lead to serious health issues. Type 1 diabetes requires being food aware from a young age, but [people] need support. In this image-conscious world, young people feel they’re required to be on top of their diet.”
