Hi everyone!
I have been Type 1 for nearly 14 years now, I have been using an insulin pump for a year now and am doing brilliantly with it (Hba1c down by nearly 2%!)
I have been told today that I have Grade 1 Maculopathy - I am devastated. Not bad enough for laser treatment, I am being seem every 3 months at the eye clinic to keep an eye on it - excuse the pun!
Has anybody else experienced maculopathy/retinopathy to this degree after such a relatively short time diagnosed.
I`m happy to answer pump questions in return!
Thanks!:D

Hi Stickybunhun and welcome to the forum!:D

Sorry i cant answer anything about your eye problems - but it must be good news that you dont need laser treatment. If they are monitoring you every few months then at least they will very quickly pick up on any changes.

My son (11) has just started pumping - 6 weeks ago - so still learning! If you look on the main board there is the 'pumpers thread'- you are more than welcome to come and say hello and give us all any advice you have - there are a few new pumpers - so we need all the help we can get!🙂Bev

Hi Stickybunhun,

Welcome to the forum. We have a fair few pumpers on the forum and they're always willing to help. I'm thinking of pumping now. I've only just started carb counting after thirteen years of type one.

Hi stickybun, welcome to the forum🙂 I think there are one or two members (that I know of) that have had treatment for retinopathy - hopefully they will be able to answer your questions. I was told I have background retinopathy only a year after diagnosis, which is worrying, but they are calling my back for frequent checks, as with you - it is good to know that they are on the (eye) ball!🙂

Welcome to the forum... I have to go back for my eye stuff in november one year one...the first one identified some changes...so this next one will be interesting...must remember the dark glasses!....but this is worrying me...let you and the rest of forum know whats going on ...good luck and rant away like the rest of us if you feel the need!

Hi Stickybun,
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your improved Hba1c!
I had to have some lasering on both eyes 4 years ago, and I too was absolutely devastated. I was convinced it was the begining of the end and I would turn blind at any moment, but since having it done I am much more philospohical about it and figure that at least it was caught and dealt with before I had any problems with my eyesight. I am still having checks at the eye clinic every 4 months, but since the lasering it has not progressed, and no more lasering (at least for the time being touch wood) is needed.

Its good news that you dont need any lasering yet, and with your improved hba1c and better control maybe you wont have to at all?! .. I found that the actual thought of having lasering done was a lot scarier than the actual treatment itself.

I have had diabetes for 30 years and never considered using the pump before joining this forum... I could do with some help on my Hba1c too!

Good luck with it all and let us know how you get on with everything.

Hev x
