Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi there. I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to put my mind at rest. I am newly diagnosed type 1 after a DKA last month. Have just received a letter to go for a chest xray which is a surprise to me. Is this a normal check up? I seem to be a complete worry bubble since this has happened after being so healthy!

Hi RachieB I would guess they are just giving you the once over based on your recent diagnosis and it wouldn’t be too much to be worried about. It’s all part of being T1, the more that gets checked the better picture you will have. I wouldn’t be surprised if you get more tests in the next months. Personally I just had my kidneys checked over out of the blue.
Best wishes on your new journey

Thank you Paul. I'm in a constant state of anxiety at the moment and this is unexpected

I can imagine but it will get much easier as you get more experience, I’d rather be T1 than T2, I think it’s much easier to manage.
Try not to worry so much it’s pretty easy to manage and there is many people that are going to be helping you.
don’t forget you can ask pretty much anything here and you’ll find someone who has experienced whatever is worrying you

Sorry to hear about your anxiety levels @Rachie B :(

A diagnosis with T1 can be overwhelming, and it can take some time to begin to process it, especially as you were struck down with DKA, which can make you feel really vulnerable.

Some people liken a T1 diagnosis to having an effect rather like grieving, with all of the stages of anger, denial, bargaining etc. and ultimately acceptance.

Hope your anxiety begins to subside soon.

Rachie - when did your GP last give your body an overall MOT check? Most likely never ...... and you know if a person doesn't actually visit the GP very often - they are sposed to call you in and give you an MOT occasionally, to prove they aren't claiming you towards their required number of patients falsely anyway. They had to call Pete in when he was in his 50s for a medical cos he hadn't consulted them for the previous decade. Was potty really cos the receptionist was saying Well he's still alive cos he was here last week, brought his wife for her diabetes review and we had a chat ......

Do you fly into a panic when your car goes for its MOT check, just because only last week you needed new blades in your windscreen wipers?

Stop hunting for hidden medical conditions at the slightest thing. Frankly if there's anything I don't already know about, wrong with either me or my car - the quicker I find out about that, the quicker I can take steps to sort it out!

Hi @Rachie B . Welcome to the forum. Please try not to worry, it’s difficult I know when you are so newly diagnosed .

Once diagnosed with diabetes of any type we should be having quite a few MOT checks at least yearly , eyes, feet , kidney function to name but a few , Their is up to 15 we are entitled to have , it’s to spot any possible problems very early on so as they can be sorted out early and quickly . In this respect we are luckier than folks who are not diabetic, I mean prior to diabetes when did you have the circulation in your legs checked, bp checked, a nice pic of your eyes taken or blood sample taken ect ect, one or two perhaps but most never. These tests are new to you and it’s only natural for you to worry that this that or summet else could be wrong , when in reality they are just being careful to look after us better so as to prevent anything from developing into a major problem later on.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply, it means a lot. I have discovered that I had a chest xray when I had a DKA although I have no recollection of it. They found a small shadow on otherwise healthy lungs so this is a follow up. I'm really worried but trying to hold it together!
