Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
So have avoided the demon drink since diagnosed type 1 - 3 1/2 weeks ago - but this Friday is the staff Xmas do - it kicks off at 13:00 - there will be lots of drink involved - I dont want to be the one who remembers everything on Monday morning. My diabetic nurse gave me the safe guide to alcohol for 'teenagers' leaflet today (Im 33). Please any top tips - I work hard all year (as most of you probably do) I need this years blow out (more so actually) - but I want to stay safe and not worry about anyone else having to deal with me and basically have a stinking hangover on Saturday as normal. I want the hangover - its the hard year worked rule - any top tips for not doing too much damage if I go out and party (on company expenses)

keep testing, make sure you eat properly and have water or diluted fruit juice between drinks. I am reliably informed if you have fizzy/carbonated drinks between alcoholic drinks it will make you more drunk. At our office party I will pop out and get cups of tea as I don't drink much and get drunk after just two or three.

A thought to bear in mind, while your liver is dealing withthe alcohol it is not releasing glucose into your system, so watch out for potential hypos (which is why it is a good idea to test if you can).

I'm sure others will be along with more advice or suggestions, but above all enjoy yourself.

Test frequently! Alcohol can cause big spikes and then hypos. Make sure there are nibbles at the party or take some of your own. Even if you are high before bed it is worth having a small snack. I have gone to bed with blood sugars of 13 and then woken up 3 hours later hallucinating because I was hypo (and that was only 1 glass of wine!). Drink plenty of water between alcohol. And bear in mind that beer contains carbs whereas wine and spirits don't (I think!) but don't inject for carbs in alcohol it could cause a serious hypo.

Have a great time!

My BGs always go high with alcohol, however much (!) I drink, but make sure you don't make any adjustments to get your BG down! And yes, always eat before bed. Wine used to be my main cause of overnight hypos, even after only an odd glass. (I haven't given up, just learn to manage it!)

Hi , Have some ID on you , Drink wise I always have drinks then a coke and then 3 drinks , I find this works for me .but I also always have a small snack before I go out .,,,,,,,,,,,enjoy your night and dont get to worried just be careful not to go mad on drink 🙂

Probably not on offer at your works party, Melissa, but at ours over midday today, I had a couple of small small glasses of mulled ale - had to be handed to me, as a council member's orphaned labrador puppy had climbed onto my lap 🙂 Followed up with some nibbles, then cycled downhill to home. No hangover, nor significant effects on my blood sugar.

Next week is another works do - ten pin bowling, followed by Chinese meal starting at 2.30pm. I'm missing the bowling, as with one knee not working properly, unfamiliar activity might result in over balancing! 🙂
