Just a quick introduction as I'm off to get the tea but I went on the first session of this course yesterday. I had my doubts about it because after 35 years of being type one I wondered how useful it would be. Well just to say that I really enjoyed the session yesterday. It lasted from 10am-12.30 and was very interesting. We started with the basics but even so there was something for everyone and if nothing else we knew we weren't the only ones to struggle!

Because of me having the stroke in Aug 2010 I am having to ask them if I can walk out of the sessions if my tiredness/dizziness gets to much for me as I was too exhausted yesterday by it - but that's only because of the stroke. I have just written a letter to the DSN who led it and will take it to the hospital when I go for a blood test later in the week.

Just wanted to tell anyone else to definitely give this course a try if they are offered it. Shame I had to wait 35 years!!

glad you are getting something out of it am sure they will understand your situation... good luck with the rest of the course

Thanks Medusa, I took the letter to the Diabetes centre at the hospital today and as luck would have it she was there so came and had a chat. Her main gripe was that it would help if GP's let her know about these sort of things so that she could make life easier for those of us who struggle. She was glad I'd mentioned it and basically said "do whatever you need to do"

Even hubby has been reading through the books - maybe he will eat a bit more healthily in future!

glad she was understanding... i find it helpful my bloke has took an interest and learned things its nice to be supported by those close to us (my brother is type one for twenty years so i have lots of support from him too)

Session 2 today and I coped much better than last week. Went into the corridor when we were paired off for discussion so that it was quieter - the lady I was with was pleased about this too! At about 11.15 I went walk about and then when I returned they were taking a break anyway so I had about half an hour total and it made a big difference. Really pleased I sorted it out.

We looked at insulin types today as well as hypos and hypers - all good stuff. I also learnt that I should probably be using 4mm needles and not pinching up to inject - I was still working on the old assumptions from 35 years ago - well unless someone tells you differently how are you meant to know? It's a good course and I would reccommend it to everyone on insulin.

Glad to hear it went well Karen 🙂 I was told to pinch up when diagnosed four years ago, so you're not that far behind the times 🙂
