I have just received an offer to to the x-pert diabetes course on-line at a cost of ?69 & if I complete it & provide feedback they'll refund me 75% of the cost.

For those of you who are lucky to live in an area where you can actually do this course what did you get out of it & if you could only access it electronically at this cost would you do it assuming you complete it & then get 75% of your money back.

I have to say my hubby also has type 2 so in effect the course would cover both of us.

the fact you need to pay for the course is a completely new concept to me and I probably wouldnt do it because of that fact, however education is the key to success........so if its all thats on offer and you can afford it you should consider it.........🙂
 
It does sound like a bargain - but would your GP/PCT pay for it if they can't provide a proper course? I think one of the main things I got from my course (not XPert) was actually meeting and learning with others in the same boat, which obviously would be missing if you did it online. But hopefully those who have done the course can tell you how beneficial the actual material was for them.
 
I think I'll e-mail a reply asking how they can justify making a charge when if it was available in my area I could go for free; bearing in mind on-line there would be as far as I can tell no interaction with other delegates.

On payday I'll probably sign up for it; I think it is quite interactive with completing exercises the same as the classroom version & e-mail them off presumably then getting feedback from an x-pert trainer.

Mind you if the training supplied in my "profession" is anything to go with the on-line courses are generally c**p. If you get something wrong the answer comes up; you go back to the question put the correct 1 in & you get awarded 100% & well done for getting everything right!.

Rather than not get any education other than the 4 hour overview (Oxfordshire's version of DESMOND I feel) which only scratched the surface & ran out of time before covering long-term complications (reason I went on it in the first place) it could be a wise investment.

I will fwd details to my GP first & ask what other education is available I don't have to pay for. I expect the answer will be diddly-squat; so I'll sign up at the end of the month & let you know what is involved & how good I feel it is or otherwise.

The only fear I have over this course now being on-line is that they will no longer offer the 6 week version for those who have it available to save costs. On the plus side I can do this at anytime and not lose any of my annual holiday to take the 1/2 days off for 6 weeks to attend the classroom version.

I'm really surprised to find Oxford doesn't do it, try ringing OCDEM directly and asking ? cos they tend to be - well no, they ARE - at the cutting edge!
 
im horrified that they are wanting you to pay ...check it is bona fide ...recently i keep getting letters to take up an offer to have cholesterol screening done in a 'PRIVATE' Mobile clinic visiting the area for a good cut price ....i get it checked by by GP as part of my care
...so i would advise to check it out with your GP to make sure they approve it 🙂
 
I'm doing the Xpert insulin course at the moment and although I've only been to the first session I'd say a good bit of the benefit is interacting with other people and hearing their stories - also asking questions as we go along. Not sure an online course would be able to provide that to be honest, but let us know if you do go for it, what it's like.
 
X-Pert course

Good Morning Very suprised they are trying to charge you for this course ,I did about 6 weeks ago and its free at my surgery, the interaction between other people on the course is good but I thought they pushed Health Guidlines about diet, far too many carbs for me but each to their own, also suprised that even there were only 12 of us on this course and 1 dropped out halfway through the first afternoon just how many were still eating a pretty much normal diet, perhaps too much trouble to try something else,but enough of my ramblings , does tend to be a bit child in a classroom course but you can always learn something new and that makes it worthwhile in my book ,good luck but try to find out why its not FREE.🙂
 
Many thanks to you for your comments. I have an appointment with my DN on 9th July, to discuss my blood test results (being done next Monday). I'll discuss it with her. Mind you she has never mentioned any sort of education to me in the past.

I do have a contact with a very nice nurse at OCDEM who looked after me on a recent study I took part in. I'll e-mail her as she may be able to forward it to the appropriate person.

The 4 hour overview I did was run by a team at OCDEM but no mention of anything else on offer education wise. I only found out about this by doing a google search, after realising there should be someting as education included on the 15 point check list on Diabetes UK.
 
An update

I've just had a response from X-pert as to why you have to pay for the electronic version & why the full course is not available in my area.

Anyway they are a Charity who are unable to cover the whole country & she agreed with me it is a lottery as to whether they can run it in your area with support from local NHS.

Charge is made to cover costs they cannot afford not to charge for it(electronic version). They do refund 75% when the course is completed.

I found the e-mail to our local education team who ran the 4 hour workshop I went to in January; so I've just sent them the question of what else is available & why can't we have this full course in oxfordshire. I expect a negative reply in that the 4 hours I did is all that's on offer.

I'm seeing the DN on the 9th so I'll discuss it with her as well.
 
Things can be so variable. My own particular education course was half a day a week over three weeks. How can it be that a person's education requirements can be deemed so much less in one area than another? Personally, I'd give everyone the Ragnar Hanas or Gretchen Becker book then arrange a few social get-togethers with a DSN and dietician there to answer questions 🙂
