Husband is 55 and has had Diabetes since age 7. He had laser 1999 to 2002 for diabetic retinopathy. Had a visual field test done 2008 and passed. Have been living outside of UK for past 12 years and now probably having to return due to work situation in USA. He is worried that he wont meet the visual fields requirements that the DVLA seem to want, if this was the case and he had to do the practical test with Consultant written back up, does this give you a car licence without restrictions? can you drive at night as well as day? or distance you can drive from home address? is the practical test a one off or done on every renewal?. Not that the DVLA will consider this but hes been driving trucks and buses for the last 20 years with accident or incident !!! The decision to return home to the UK will largely depend on whether he can hold a car licence, help or advice greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum @DawnyM

As someone with Diabetes treated with insulin I had to let the DVLA know. The only impact is that I receive a licence for three years at a time and have to apply again. There is a check with my consultant. I am perfectly happy with this as it is important that we are safe to drive. They check on your hypo awareness and that you have had your retinal screening done.

I think that the regulations for Trucks and busses are more stringent, and you could check these with the DUK helpline by emailing helpline@diabetes.org.uk

Hello and welcome @DawnyM

This is the information required if you have had laser treatment for retinopathy https://www.gov.uk/diabetic-retinopathy-and-driving, this is useful information from Diabetes UK https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/life-with-diabetes/driving

The sight requirements are either reached or not, you're either issued a licence for 1/2/3 years - depending on type of licence or you don't reach the sight requirements. You can reapply for your licence if it is revoked and your sight improves.

Fingers crossed he passes the visual field and any other tests with flying colours @DawnyM

Let us know how he gets on

Sorry but if i was worried i wouldn't pass any test to drive let alone an eyesite test, I WOULDN'T DRIVE..full stop. God forbid a bus or truck.

The way I read it the OP is in the US and contemplating returning to the UK.
