I have been t2 for 11 years, and I am 15 weeks pregnant, my Bms have always been between 4-6, but in the last few days I have been getting readings between 8-13, which for me is very high especially when I have cut my portion sizes right down, so much so that I have lost nearly 15kg in the time I have been pregnant. I have no diabetic friends or family that have been pregnant, so have nobody to ask if this is normal, my doctors don't seem to be too worried at this point, but I am seriously worried. Any feed back would be massively appreciated. Thanks Catherine X

Hi

Is there any way you could go to your surgery and asked to be referred to a Diabetes specialist at your local hospital? If you can I would nag them to do this. You need the help and support at this time and it sounds as if they've just left you to it. The fact that you are losing weight does sound concerning. Maybe you could ring NHS direct and see what they say?

Best wishes, Lauren x

It's pretty normal for blood glucose control to change frequently through pregnancy, but you do need to be able to counter react the changes though, to prevent them getting out of hand..

Try not to worry too much, yes your levels aren't great but they aren't drastic, but if you'll not being seen by the hospital diabetic team or a specialist diabetic midwife, you need to speak to your doctor to refer you, and I would also query this with your currant midwife as well..

It's fairly normal for BGs to be massively raised in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Please try not to worry too much.

Thank You everyone. I am under the care of a diabetic team, but every time I go to the with my concerns they send me away with no reassurance. I am only panicking because I keep getting it drummed into me that to keep my baby healthy, I need to be better. But get no advice on how to do that. Just a panicky first time mum. Thanks for your help to calm me. 🙂

Firstly, hello, and pop over to the pregnancy board - there's several of us around a similar stage to you just now!

You need to get onto your diabetic mw (or dsn, or whoever you've got contact details for) today. Please, do.

In the meantime, have you been testing for ketones? I've been told both times that any readings over 10 need blood ketones checking. It's unlikely, but really needs to be done.

You're right to be concerned, and you might need to shout louder to get your meds changed (are you on insulin yet? My insulin reqs, as a t1, have rocketed in the last couple of weeks, and I'm 19+0 today) or some better suppoirt about what to do in this sort of situation.

Hope you can get somewhere soon.

Hi there. 🙂 As i understand it, t2s go on to insulin while pregnant, but I don't know if that would be the case if you were or diet & ex, or just if you were already on oral meds. As far as i know most of the oral meds are not used in pregnancy. I would definitely challenge your diab team on this today, as you shouldn't need to starve yourself!! Diabetes UK also do a fab booklet for sale on their website, pregnancy & diabetes i think its called - well worth getting. Best of luck. Xxx
