An American cyclist who was diagnosed with diabetes as a baby has vowed to restore the sport?s reputation after the Lance Armstrong affair as he launches the world?s first all-diabetic professional cycling team.
Phil Southerland said Armstrong had ?lied and cheated? his way to the seven Tour de France victories, which he was formally stripped of in October for using performance-enhancing drugs. Armstrong?s titles had made him a global icon for overcoming adversity because they came after he survived testicular cancer.

But Southerland said the newly formed Team Novo Nordisk could rebuild cycling?s image by inspiring young people to take up the sport for the right reasons ? and declared his intention to one day enter an all-diabetic team in the Tour de France.

The sports team ? launched in Denmark today ? will be spearheaded by Southerland?s team of 17 international male pro-cyclists. In total it comprises more than 100 diabetic cyclists, triathletes and runners, who have been living with the disease for a combined total of more than 1,000 years.
