Hi there. My son is type 1 and he might have the chance to work in LA. Is there anyone out there who is insulin dependant that has worked in the USA that can advise us on how he gets his drugs over there without having to pay? Is there an insurance company that would cover this ?? Any help appreciated.

hi @Holly2020. I asked my hubby who has worked all over the world, and his train of thought was...if your son is being moved to USA through current employer, he may well get insurance cover via his employers (but he needs to check whats covered 'thoroughly'). However if hes moving under his own steam and arranging independent cover, he is unlikely to get cover as its a pre-existing condition. Or, if they do cover him, he will most likely find the premiums or his own contributions to the cost of medicines would be substantial/excessive.

Latest info I had was last year, from Canada where drugs are cheaper than the USA generally, was that a 10ml vial of Humalog cost approx. $ can 300.

Hope your son has an amazing time away @Holly2020

Healthcare costs in the US do seem very steep - especially for insulin, so travel/health insurance would need careful consideration, and even then he may find that there is a significant ‘copay’ contribution required, or that only certain medicines are covered under the policy.

Perhaps the Diabetes UK helpline might be able to offer some advice or suggestions? You can call 03451232399 Monday-Friday during office hours.
