Our school catering has recently been taken over by Cucina and people are giving favourable reports. Apparently they claim to serve healthy food. I never use the school canteen, partly because I only have half an hour for lunch and like to go for a walk so eat at my desk, and partly because the combination of vegetarianism and moderate carb doesn't usually compute in canteens!
I thought I would give them a chance though and emailed their Head a Office to ask if they could provide the carb and protein content of their veggie dishes. A colleague also mentioned that she worries about the salt content so I've asked about that too.
They've sent me a list of the carb and calorie content of all their dishes but I am sceptical. Apart from the massive disclaimer in the accompanying email, the fact that their macaroni cheese has 14g per portion and baked beans are 4g rings alarm bells.
Has anyone had any success in obtaining reliable nutritional info from caterers?

I’m wondering if it Could be the size of the portions.
I mean, I don’t know what age groups your school teaches, but I’m thinking they may have given you the dietary info for meals they serve to youngsters rather than portions for adults.

I agree with Ljc. Those amounts could be because child portions (are supposed to be) smaller than portions for adults. It's also worth double checking that the numbers quoted are carbohydrate rather than sugar, and for portion (what size?) or 100g.

You're both right of course but even then, would a portion of beans for strapping teenagers really be 30g (which is what it would need to be to give the carbs they say)?
I did wonder Copepod about the sugar but I don't think that's it because of the relatively high numbers they quote for their sandwiches and baguettes.

maybe they have magical beans and the macaroni is made from clouds!!! Sorry about my sense of humour!! On a serious note they maybe just so tight on the portions that, thats what the catering staff are supposed to put on the plate as they are trying to make a profit and grams mean pounds when you are catering for hundreds.
