A Rowan County woman is hopeful that a research study involving an "artificial pancreas" could save the life of her diabetic son.
Michelle Baughman says the health of her son Tyler, 13, is deteriorating. The two will travel to Richmond, Virginia, this week as a result of Tyler being accepted into a research program.
The project is being hosted at the Center for Diabetes Technology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. The Artificial Pancreas Project is intended to accelerate the development of a commercially viable artificial pancreas that would mimic the biological function of the pancreas for people living with Type 1 diabetes.
