A woman who went to hospital because she had blood coming out of her ear was forced to call the national 111 NHS number to book in to see a doctor who was sat a few feet away in the next room.

Diane Riddle, 58, was told by a nurse at the hospital she would need to see a doctor and there was one in a room next door who was free of patients.
But instead of being able to walk in and see them she was told she would have to ring the national NHS number from her mobile and book an appointment.

The 111 service has been launched to replace NHS Direct, and is a non emergency number that patients can call for healthcare advice. They are assessed and advised whether they need to go to hospital. The service can be used to make appointments for patients to see doctors and dispatch ambulances where required.
