A woman died after an NHS gynaecologist perforated her uterus during a series of botched procedures, a hearing was told.
The woman also suffered major bowel damage during a hysteroscopy operation at the hands of Dr Nikolaos Papanikolaou and died a month later.
Papanikolaou did not warn the patient of the risks involved, did not carry out the procedure correctly and failed to recognise mistakes that resulted in
her death, it was claimed.
He also left vaginal swabs in patients and failed to carry out caesareans, with one case leading to a still birth. His clinical assessment described him as ?deficient?, adding that his care ?fell seriously below standards expected of a specialist registrar?.
The Greek doctor has admitted charges in relation to the dead woman and another patient, but denies a series of other allegations relating to five women while he was working at Basildon and Thurrock General Hospitals NHS Trust in Essex between 2008 and 2009.
Alexandra Felix, for the General Medical Council (GMC), said: ?This is a case about a doctor who has displayed deficient clinical assessment with outcomes that were sub-optimum.
