Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone. I'm suffering at the moment with excess wind. I have had type 2 diabetes for about 3 years and I take Metformin 500mg x 2 twice a day. I have always suffered with very loose stools but over the last few days things have been much worse. Can you please help with suggestions on how to control the wind as I am now afraid to eat much.

Is it ordinary Metformin or one of the slower release varieties? The second sort are kinder to the digestive tract being slower release. Do you always take them with a meal? - cos that can help.

It's ordinary Metformin and I have been taking it for 3 years without much problem. I always take it after food. The tummy troubles have been constant over the last few days and I'm unsure of what to do next.

Have you changed or introduced new foods into your diet?

The brand of Metformin has not changed. I have been eating less carbs and increased my fruit intake mainly plums and strawberries as my Hb1ac has been increasing slowly over the last 12 months and is currently 61.

Fruit might be causing the problems both with wind and rising HbA1c. It is quite high carb and whilst strawberries are one of the lower carb fruits you still need to ration the portion size. Plums are a little higher but not too bad as fruit goes but also need to be rationed. I would not have more than one portion of fruit per day which would be about half a dozen strawberries or a couple of plums. I find Deflatine good for wind but I don't think it is something I would use routinely, so maybe try changing your diet and rationing the fruit more and see if that helps. Nuts cause me really bad wind.

Thanks for the advice. I will cut down on the fruit. I have also started to snack on nuts so this may be the problem. Trying to change my diet so everything is a bit of trial and error at the moment. Hopefully I'll see some improvement soon.

Well just because your tum hasn't objected to metformin in the previous years, does not mean your body can never react adversely to it! This bit's very simple to change - ask the GP for Slow Release metformin,

My thoughts to.
I personally find plums and strawberries both more problematic for me than, blueberries or raspberries.
