Hi all,

I got a new laptop with WINDOWS 7 on instead of VISTA.
I am trying to use 'carelink' for use with the sensors, but it keeps telling me its incompatable! I have rung Medtronic in America - but their technical bods are really busy - so thought i would ask on here instead. I know its a longshot that most wont use sensors - but you may have 'carelink' for other uses. Have you experienced problems with WINDOWS 7 being able to read data? Thanks. 🙂Bev

hi bev we got new laptop beginning of the month with windows 7, and have had no probs altho i guess we dont use sensors hope you can sort it soon rather then later, i take it you cant get hold of a vista disc and install ??

i know with windows 7 u get something that is called backward compatibility which should allow you to run vista

Not sure, I know some true computer wizards will pop along shortly, however can't you run software in old systems, I remember using windows 2000 and running some software in windows 95 mode, right click properties or something? Worth a dig maybe.

Good luck

Rossi🙂

Hi Bev,

If you find the application and right click on it, then go to properties, go to compatibility and check the box, drop down the list and you'll find a number of compatability options.

I'd tend to suggest XP SP3 as your first port of call.. then head along to Vista etc.

PM me if you still have issues.

Hi Bev,

I dont know about Carelink and Windows 7, but you may remember I had troubles installing with VISTA . I had to talk to the technical dept at medtronic, one call was about 35mins! She had to tell me how to move all these folders and drivers and stuff- Im sure there is something they can talk you through!

If I was clever enough in this department Id share my wisdom! I bet they are diverting calls through the new year? :(

have a look here it does tell you what is it currently not compatible with

Thanks Steph, when i spoke to America - they seemed to think that it was compatable with some versions of WINDOWS 7 - but the person who told us this wasnt a 'computer bod' - he was just on the helpline and said we would have to wait ages to speak to anyone who knew the full details. He said that some people have got up and running with 'carelink' and that some havent been able to - but they dont understand why! I am just hoping that it is compatable with my new laptop or i will be a bit miffed!😱🙂Bev

yes well worth speaking to some one who knows the full details , will be frustating for you hope it sorts itself out , i would suggest going back to the shop but i guess they will say you knew what was on it when you bought it and probs wont be very symphthetic.

I'm wondering if you have Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit? They may not have the drivers (or whatever) for the 64 bit version - I encountered that with 64-bit vista on some apps.

Hi Northerner, apparently we have the WINDOWS 7 32 bit - not sure what the difference is myself - but we will be ringing the UK lot tomorrow to see if they can talk us through things. These sort of things never run smoothly do they?🙂Bev

There is an issue with 64bit, however, this application has more of an issue with quad core CPUs

The problem with a lot of specialist applications is that they are written as a contract application with no on-going development or support. So it may be this is an XP application (or earlier) and managed to work on Vista, however when you get to Windows 7 which is very good for backward compatability within applications, it is highly dependant on 'pure' Vista drivers or drivers written specifically for Window 7.

My experience of running Windows 7 32 and 64 bit on two old pieces of hardware (laptop 64 bit and desktop 32 bit) with Ultimate (64 bit) and Business (32 bit) it has installed and found the required drivers very well from the original installation disc.

However, custom hardware needing specialist drivers, and there is your problem!

The problem really lies with the suppliers of the software, not the OS or the laptop vendor. Resolving it, well you have to hope they come up with a fix pretty fast!

Can I jump in and ask a simple question?

I'm going to buy or steal a PC for my outlaws soon.

Whats the difference between a 32 bit and 64 bit OS

Please answer in lay terms as much as possible

PS I'm no thief.

64 bit processors and operating systems are faster. For most things, web, word, excel, email etc not that much faster.

For number crunching then much faster.

If there isn't going to be any game playing, I'd probably suggest 64 bit as MS are pushing all OS's in the future towards 64bit.

Office 2003 and everything else I've installed on my 64 bit system works fine - BUT if you're looking to use older hardware, e.g. printers, scanners etc then find out first if there are 64 bit issues.

Oh, and shouldn't it be the outlaws who steal it? 🙄:D

hi Bev hope you managed to get sorted on the phone to the uk lot today

Update, I rang the UK technical section, and guess what - they are off until 11th January! The American lot are 24 hour!😱

So, I rang America again to be told that there is no possibility at this present time, for their software to be made compatable with WINDOWS 7.😱

They are 'working on it' - but he cannot guarantee just how long this may take. It could be 6 months or it could be longer.

So, I took my new laptop back to the shop where i bought it from (thankfully not a huge outlet - a family owned business who we have had lots of dealings with and find them brilliant). However, they tried to work out ways of getting round the problem, but in the end decided that if they did some things it could invalidate the warranty - or take so many hours labour that it would cost me lots! So, they offered to swop my lovely WINDOWS 7 laptop for one that was compatable (VISA, WINDOWS 200 OR XP) - but I have decided that i dont want to downgrade my laptop for something that would feel like a step backwards. Windows 7 is brilliant and so quick - i would hate to go back to anything less.

So, for now, i wont be able to look at the data on my laptop. This annoys me intensely because it means that a huge company like Medtronic are selling a product that isnt compatable with one of the latest operating systems that there is. It's not like it has been sprung on them - Windows 7 has been out for a year at least.

So we have paid ?400 for a box of 10 sensors that we wont be able to read the data from. 🙄Bev

Bev I'd like to help.

I use Linux. It's not windows anything. Completely different. Chalk and cheese. However I have installed something called a virtual machine so I can use my Accu Chek windows software.

Virtualisation is a bit long winded but it is possible to run XP or vista on a PC with windows 7.

It's a bit of a sledge hammer to crack a nut but it is an option. Please PM me if you want any more info.

Thats blooming awful- they should have told you...

Gosh I had forgotten how expensive the sensors are....:( xx

Sorry to hear they couldn't sort it Bev - it's a perennial problem with Microsoft operating systems, partly because they upgrade them so often that it's difficult for software houses to keep up with. Talking of big companies - my Sony mp3 software won't work with Vista of Windows 7 grrr!
