Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello. My husband was diagnosed last week with type 2, after many symptoms including weight loss, thirst, headaches, blurred vision. We are struggling big time on what he can and can't eat. Don't know how we should be reading the "typical values" on the packaging of foods. Other than the traffic light system we're unsure.
We love food and cooking, and now don't know what to cook. Have tried a couple of recipes on here, with success.
His blood sugars are reading between 15 and 19 , which is high, but not as high as diagnosis, as it was 30 +++ then.
Any advice much appreciated. Starting with the basics.
Thanks

Hello Welcome . Sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis, it does come as a shock doesn't it . The good news is that's a condition that with a bit of work and knowledge, can be managed well also once your husbands BG (blood glucose) levels come down he will be feeling so much better.

I ignore the traffic light system on the front of the packs and turn to the back where other values are given. its the total carbohydrate content you are looking for, ignore the one underneath that says something like, the total of which are sugars, its carbohydrates our bodies cant handle to well, sugar in all its forms including natural is just another carb
I find a pair of add and weigh scales helps in working out what carbs are in my portion.

Basically its the starchy carbs that can affect us the worst, potatoes, rice, pasta and bread especially white. just cutting down on these will help. till you find suitable substitutes fill up on leafy green veg .

just to give you a few ideas on what is fine for us , and this is probably going to surprise you.
If you eat meat, meat of all colours is fine, so are high meat content sausages and burgers, eggs cooked anyway you like even fried, cheese, fish, leafy green veg, mushrooms. I am making myself feel hungry here lol

Hi Terence
Welcome aboard, I hope you and your husband find lots of good stuff to cook, it takes a bit of getting used to but there's plenty of scope for good food I promise 🙂
