Hi All,
I recently got diagnosed with diabetes and had a HBA1c blood test result of 109 at the end of November. It's my understanding that this test is an average of two to three months of blood glucose levels. How then could I have had another test on the 23rd December and have the result of 34? As this is an average of two/three months it mates no mathematical sense? Could anyone help me clear this up please? Thanks.
Agreed that those 2 readings are incongruous. One of them has to be incorrect. Let's hope it is the former and you are not diabetic after all.
Were you symptomatic in November?
Are you sure the second reading doesn't have a 1 missing off the front?

Thanks Barbara, I'm pretty sure a 1 wasn't missing as I haven't been feeling ill, have been eating more healthily and have been taking Metformin. I want really showing any symptoms of diabetes in November and the doctor looked at me quizzically when I told her that in November. Fingers crossed the first one was somehow wrong...
Were other tests done in November like a finger prick BG which might help corroborate the high HbA1c or could you have been severely anaemic at the time. I am guessing that you would have mentioned if you had had a blood transfusion in the interim period?? Those are the only possibilities which might go some way to explaining the two readings in such a short space of time.
Why were you tested in the first place at the end of November? I'm not a medical person, but I would think it cannot be good for you to take Metformin if it turns out you are not in fact diabetic. Please don't let them fob you off with the standard excuse of waiting months for an blood test/appointment (it's 6 weeks at my GP surgery) - you need them NOW.
Thanks for your responses Felinia and Barbara. The reason for the test in the first place was that I complained of a pressure feeling under my lower left rib so they did a whole range of blood tests mostly relating to liver and kidney functions but also blood sugar. All came back normal with the exception of the HBA1C. They didn't do a finger prick test. I have not had a transfusion. Thanks again.

As I understand it the result relies heavily on the previous 2 weeks, so either as others have said the first result is faulty, or another suggestion is were you on any medication that could cause a blood sugar increase?
Third suggestion could the greatly improved result be due to careful thought of what you were actually eating?

I hadn't been taking any medication but after I was initially diagnosed I was much more conscious of how many carbs/sugars I was consuming but I doubt that I was that angelic that I somehow managed to defy the laws of science ha ha.
Good to know it's not likely to do any harm. I found a post from Aug 2018 where a Forum member (happysnapper) reduced their HbA1c from 103 to 38 over a 3 month period when on Metformin. They also lost a further 2.5 stones, reduced carbs and increased exercise. It took 3 times longer than Nando2020 but big losses can be achieved, if the initial diagnosis was actually correct. The next HbA1c will be interesting.

Thanks again, I will be pushing for another test double quick and will let you know. It may be worth noting that I'm not overweight, BMI of 25, 71kg weight 5 foot 7, blood pressure normal so it appears as though I'm relatively healthy except for this diagnosis. My diet has been poor though and I do enjoy a drink. I'm very grateful for all of your responses, this is a very friendly forum!
I and I am sure others here will be keeping everything crossed that you haven’t joined our club , don’t get me wrong you are very welcome on the forum.
Please don’t worry about taking Metformin if you are (hopefully) not diabetic as it was originally designed and prescribed to aid weight loss, since then apart from the unpleasant digestive tract issues, it has been found to have quite a few beneficial effects.
