Celeste Roundtree, 54 years old, knew she had put on weight over the years and wasn't exercising as much as she should. Still, she says she was shocked when her doctor at a regular checkup told her she was prediabetic, a condition that can often lead to full-blown diabetes.
At first, Ms. Roundtree, of Charlotte, N.C., says she was "in complete denial" after her diagnosis last year. She assumed her condition was borderline and she wasn't at serious risk. She refused to follow her doctor's recommendation to attend a diabetes-education program, complaining that it was too far from her home. Finally, a persistent nurse persuaded Ms. Roundtree to join the program and found a more convenient location for her.
