...when blood sugars have been in the 6 range would they go up to 12 when I've not been ill.

Could be something you've eaten or drunk that's sent them high, stress or your going down with something, my BGs normally know I'm ill before I do.
Another thing it could be is your finger was contaminated with something sweet that gave a false result.

I don't normally test as I was told it wasn't important. But a few weekends ago I felt particularly rough - used to off days due to other health issues- and so decided to check and it was 19. Which made me feel worse of course! Left it a few days and it was down to 11 and I've checked every five days or so since and it's been 11 or 12. But annoyingly I feel so well, better than when it was in the 6s.

Testing is important. You wouldn't try to drive a car with your eyes closed, so how can you keep Diabetes under control without testing. It is advised to test on waking, and also just before food & 2 hours after. Sadly, the medical profession don't think us type 2's should test for many silly reasons (it will worry us or we won't know what the numbers mean) when really they don't want to pay for prescribing meters & strips.

Testing daily gives us the ability to track & trend changes, the longer the interval between testing the less reliable the trending data will be.

Have you eaten anything different at all?
