- Relationship to Diabetes
- Type 1.5 LADA
I thought I should explain myself and the thinking behind my adherence to the low carb/low GI life.
When I was first diagnosed as T2 my doctor in London, who was really switched on and knew a lot about diabetes, told me I could do myself a lot of good by limiting the carb content of my meals. I'd been doing the low salt/low fat thing for years as my mother had hypertension and high cholesterol and I wanted to support her. For a T2, it's well known that the diet helps, even if the medical profession hasn't really caught on yet. But now that I'm officially a T1.5/LADA instead of a T2, does the low carb/low GI thing still apply?
Well yes, it does. Without the proper medications to manage my version of diabetes, the only tool I had was the diet, it did help a bit, and I noticed some things as time went on. Over time my general health has improved in some areas (I have a few other problems such as Rheumatoid Arthritis). My skin is clearer, I'm not hungry all the time as I was when trying to follow any of the many calorie based diets out there and my digestive processes are much more regular. Plus I'm slowly losing weight, not a lot, it's about 5.5 kilos so far this year. I have an endless list of allergies too, mostly food related, but many of them are greatly reduced these days and I think it's because of the diet though I can't prove that. In fact, I can't prove any of this, it's must what I perceive is happening.
So, if I seem a bit preachy sometimes, you now know why. I'm a convert and they're the worst.
