Hi Becky

It probably partly depends on what you chose. Most Chinese takeaway food is very high in carbs and often also very high in fat. Higher carb loads often seem to take longer to digest for me. They are also trickier to guess right and underestimation may be a factor. Additionally the fat will slow down the absorption of the carbs, so to begin with your bolus may work well. However depending on how much you ate, there may come a point where the carbs are still chugging through your system but the bolus has run out of steam (I also seemed to find my usual ratio didn't work so well with meals containing many more carbs than 'normal'). When on MDI I used to do calculate a total dose based on the carbs I was expecting to eat plus an additional third. I'd then inject around two thirds up front and the last third perhaps 2 hours after eating. Effectively 'spreading' the action of the insulin over a longer period.

I'm not suggesting the proportions/amounts will work for you - you'd need to keep some notes and try a few experiments to get a system you can use, but it might give you some ideas 🙂

Immediate action is to take a correction dose of your bolus insulin.

In addition to the points previously made, any chance you may have forgotten your basal?

I forgot mine last night, remembered this morning but I had to be extra-aggressive with Apidra today!
