According to recent research, more than 50 percent of type 1 diagnoses occur after age 18, and many in middle or older ages. More than a third of all people with type 1 are overweight or obese,” he added.

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and you either don’t fit the typical profile or your blood sugars continue to rise despite following your treatment plan, you might have been misdiagnosed.

I wonder what proportion of the general population are overweight or obese. Could it be that it is around 30%? If so then the population of those of us diagnosed with T1 later in life might also be 30% overweight or obese.

It is a bit easier for those of us that develop symptoms of T1, that are not overweight or obese as there is then a higher chance of their spotting T1 Rather than assuming that it is T2. it depends on how far down the line we are with the destruction of beta cells when picked up, but for some of us it is then DKA.

Hopefully there is a greater awareness of T1 being possible at any age now, but this article suggests that there is a long way to go.

Nope. About double that:

The Health Survey for England 2021 estimates that 25.9% of adults in England are obese and a further 37.9% are overweight but not obese. Obesity is usually defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. BMI between 25 and 30 is classified as ‘overweight’.

I’m very proud that the forum seems to have a finely tuned ‘spidey sense’ when newcomers arrive with slightly atypical aspects to their presentation, and will often encourage newbies to go back to their Dr to get their classification checked - and many of them do indeed end up being re-classified.
