Hello, my close aunt and her husband were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
They would like to know what medication is recommended currently?
Thank you,

It really does depend on how far into the diabetic range they are as to what medication they may have been prescribed if at all as if they are just into the zone they may be given the opportunity to reduce their blood glucose by making some dietary changes and increasing exercise.
They hopefully will have been given some dietary advice but perhaps you could give a bit more information about their situation. Hopefully they will be encouraged to visit the site for themselves if they are able as they and you will find lots of helpful links and good ideas.

Thank you, yes - they are at the stage where they try to adjust the diet, do more sports and were prescribed following medication:
- forxiga 10mg in the mornn
- trajenta 5mg after lunch
- glucophage 1000

Some other people may be familiar with those medications but it does sound to be a bit of a mixture. Do you know what their HbA1C is and how were they diagnosed? that info would make it easier for people to comment.

yes, they’re worried about the side effects as well...
their HbA1c for both around 6.5.

They were diagnosed at the hospital based on the blood analysis, I believe. are there multiple ways? I can ask specifically

6.5 is a percentage which in the UK are the old units which some people are still using but that converts to 48mmol/mol which is the first bar in giving a diabetes diagnosis so really I am surprised that they have been given so much medication as some dietary changes would most likely be all that would be necessary to bring the level into the pre-diabetes zone which is 42-47mmol/mol, and below that is what people aim for. Unless of course there are other reasons for the medication then reducing portion size of carbohydrates and cutting out some of the very high carb foods would make a huge difference and trying to increase exercise would help.
Diagnosis is usually by a HbA1C and people are being diagnosed when they have tests for other things but often because they are suffering symptoms, there are certainly people being diagnosed following having COVID so that was why I asked.
Those were not familiar medications so I wondered if they are not in the UK.

Hi . Welcome to the forum @YuKim .
I am no medic but that seems a strange lot diabetes medications for any Hb1ac of 48 or 6.5 in the old % system . 48 is the starting point where you get the diagnosis .
If that level is correct for one or both of them ( I think you should check up on that ) Personally I would discuss with the Gp or the diabetes nurse about trying lifestyle changes which includes some changes in foods for three months first and see what they say .
