Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello there people

First of all, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 4 years old and I have been taking insulin shots for over 20 years now; I mainly use Novorapid Flexpen and Levemir Flexpen daily, Novorapid with each meal and Levemir at night before I sleep. I am planning on studying for a Master's Degree at the Liverpool John Moores University starting September of 2017, and as an Egyptian who has never really been to the UK before, it's really difficult to gather my head around how things work over there.

I have been to the US a couple of times and finding the Novorapid was easy at almost any big pharmacy so it wasn't an issue, but I need to understand how that system works in the UK before I go ahead and take the leap. Would I need prescriptions? Are there online websites that do fast-delivery like Amazon UK, for example? Is it just readily available at any local pharmacy?

I also would like to know how much one flexpen (300 units) costs. I came across a website called weldricks which seemingly sells a pack of 5 for 46.51 GBP.

Thank you so much for your time.

Welcome.
Insulin is only available on prescription in the UK.

Welcome to the group & best of luck with your studies...
Outside of that, I can't help you with the process as I live in the States but I'm sure that there will be people along who know the answers

Hi and welcome to the forum.
You can not buy insulin in the UK. You have to register with a Doctor (GP) who will provide a prescription for you. No idea how you will fund the insulin so you need to sort that the price is about
Insulin Aspart (Novorapid)
3 ml prefilled pen (Flexpen) Pack of 5 £30.60

Hello, and welcome. Insulin isn't available to buy without a prescription in the Uk, so you'll need to register with a Doctor who can prescribe it for you. I would have thought that Liverpool John Moores would be the best people to ask how you go about seeing a doctor once you're here, have a look on their website to see if there's a link to a student welfare officer, or a general enquiries department, it must be a problem that they are used to dealing with, so they can probably give you the answer.

Welcome to the forum tarrekalsakka. As others have said, you would need a prescription from a family doctor, also called a general practitioner (GP). Generally, people who need medication for diabetes in England are issued with a medical exemption certificate, so there's no charge for insulin, test strips etc. The overseas students officers at Liverpool John Moore's University should be able to advise you about visas, medical charges etc. Good luck with your studies. What subject?
