I was diagnosed type 2 possibly 1 in January. I have been on Metformin which made me vomit so was put on Gliclazide. My mum died in February and my appetite has disappeared. I'm now beginning to eat small dinners and my sugar level is about 10-11. I was put on insulin last week and whilst I do feel a little better I have gone from walking 5 miles a day before Christmas to only walking to the end of the road with a stick my muscles are so weak and I am in a lot of pain with tingling in hands and feet. Would love to hear from anyone who has been left to struggle and watch their diabetes take over their life and how long before they got back to normal. Joan

Hello and a warm welcome to the forum.
Your in the right place for friends, advice, support and a good chat..There is always someone here...and we all understand exactly how you feel.
You have been through a lot since January and may sincere condolances for your loss.
You will get back to walking your 5 miles again..it will just take a little time till you do. I cant say how long you will take to get there but you will.
Diabetes does'nt have to take over your life...it just feels like this initially while you adjust to a new routine.
Please stay positive and be strong..you dont have to struggle..we all on here will help you...Do you have a good medical support team or DSN?
Hope this helps a little
Heidi

Hi Joan, welcome to the forum. I'm very sorry to hear of the problems you've been having. Do you have a DSN you can contact with regard to your difficulties? What insulin are you on? I don't know your age, but there often seems to be a difficulty in diagnosing Type 1's who are not in the normal pre-20's age group - I was 49 and there are several others here who were diagnosed later in life.

Unfortunately, some people seem to get better care than others. Do let us know your concerns and maybe we can help to get together a list of things you need answering to improve your situation.

Thanks for your reply I am 65. I went to A & E last week I felt so ill and they got me an appointment with the Diabetic Clinic at our local hospital who have been a great help. My background insulin is Lantus (12) and NovaRapid 3 times a day (2). I am concerned that I have slipped through the jet and will never return to my old level of fitness. Joan

Thank you Heidi for your words of encouragement - I know I will get there my dog insists! Joan

Jaon, it may take a little time for you to return or get near to your pre-diagnosis level of fitness as your body has been through rather a lot and it will depend on how your tingling et cetera settles. All I can say is that just prior to diagnosis I found it a real effort to even get out of bed and to manage housework and cooking and would get the car out to go down into my local town as I couldn't manage a 10 minute walk without exhaustion. I'd put it down to the recurrent infections but the diagnosis explained a lot. Took a while for me to start feeling better but after a month I noticed a significant difference. 18 months on I reckon I'm as fit as I ever have been and feel really well with lots of energy.

Thanks for your encouraging reply Vanessa. At the moment its all I can do to look after myself and my dog but as I have only been on insulin for a week its early days. Glad to hear you are feeling fit and well. So glad I have found this forum. Joan

Hello Joan , sorry to hear you are having a tough time at the moment , things

will get better soon !! At the moment your body is still recovering and getting

used to having insulin. I think most of us on the forum can remember back to

where you are now , it will get easier as your body adapts and recovers .

As for the pain / tingles that will probably be your nerves , mine were the

same after running so high for a long time , then going lower after going on

insulin , I was in agony for a few weeks but with a short course of medication

I was fine and now only take my insulin and no other meds. If the pain is

causing you major discomfort I would mention it to your Doctor or DSN .

I now that Lyrica is usually prescribed as is Amitriptyline for nerve pain.

I hope you start to feel better soon 🙂
