Type 3c

New Member
Hi All
Please could you help.
I am confirmed as Type 3c due to the damage to my pancreas. I was put on insulin yesterday
by my practice nurse, however because I was due to fly to Italy on Sunday she suggested I wait till I get back in the uk four days later and then start the injections.

However my trip has been put back a week.
My question should I start injecting now or wait a further two weeks

I tried to ask my practice nurse but she had finished for the day
Any help appreciated
Oh forgot, I had been treated for type2 for many years

Thanks

Hi Type 3c, welcome to the forum 🙂 What are your blood sugar levels like currently? When will you be able to contact your practice nurse again? Unfortunately, we can't give medical advice as we aren't medically-qualified and we don't know the ins and outs of your personal situation. From what you say, it doesn't sound as though a move to insulin is critical, given that a short delay was deemed OK, but you do need to check with one of your team. What insulin have you been given? Were you on any medication when treated as Type 2, and is the insulin seen as a progression?

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

On balance, (and risk assessment) it is probably better to wait till you get back, principally because starting on insulin can be slightly tricky initially. You don’t want to be eating unfamiliar food with unfamiliar treatment. There’s a particular skill to treating 3c with insulin, particularly if you take Creon. To an extent, it depends on what insulin regime you are to be on, but I would ask this of your practice nurse after the weekend, and carry on with your current treatment in the meantime.

It’s worth remembering that statistically, you are the only 3c patient on the practice nurse’s books, and the plan for the future may require hospital appointments.

There is a small coterie of pancreatic diabetics on the forum, who you will find refer to themselves as Creonistas. As am I, though I came to chronic pancreatitis years after I became Type 1. The challenges are the same.

Best of luck, and keep in touch. You’ve landed on the friendliest and most helpful forum on the planet, so ask any question you like. There are no stupid questions - not knowing is not stupidity, but not asking is.

Hi Northener and mikeyB

Thank you both for your advice. I take on board what you both have said and will speak to the practice nurse on Monday.
Only 10% of my Pancreas works and I have been on Pancrease HL since 1993. The acute attack of pancreatitis caused quite a bit of damage. Since 93 I have been going to Manchester Hospital every 6 months. I take at present 2 gliclizide tablets in a morning and one metformin after evening meals.
I’ve no doubt I’ll be on again. Thanks again for your info
